a solar panel is one thing, but adding a few hundred pounds of dirt and water to the roof will change the center of gravity and make the bus easier for a roll over?

Yeah, and???

These guys are idiots. Even the lady from that Chicago place where they did the green roofs seemed puzzled by what they were doing.

Really, typical artiste' innovation....

I agree that these guys are inadequate for their position, and putting a garden on the roof of a bus is a complete joke, but to say that it will alter the center of gravity of the school bus Is also a joke. Most roof racks are designated to hold at least a hundred pounds without altering the safety of a vehicle.

An average cubic foot of dirt is about 60lbs. Depending upon how much dirt was used, it is quite obvious that you could quickly add some serious weight to make a bus top heavy, if not strain its suspension and the structural integrity of the roof, deeming it unsafe.

It doesn't take very much weight to make a vehicle "top heavy." Although roof racks may be rated to carry a load, that doesn't mean that the vehicle was designed to carry the load at that particular location on the vehicle.

Additionally, adding weight to any part of a vehicle creates a moment. A moment is a force defined by two things:

1) The force = the weight (or the soil in this case)

2) The distance from the point of rotation = or the height of the soil's location from the ground

When you multiply these together you get a rotational moment (as the bus rounds a curve). Reduce the weight or move the weight closer to the ground and you reduce the effect of the moment. It quickly becomes obvious that even adding a small amount of weight to the top of a vehicle drastically creates "balancing" challenges.

Lastly, without a tuned suspension for an increased head load, the bus would probably have a "spongy" feel to the suspension and it would be easy to get it in a rhythmic sway which ends abruptly with a rollover.

Just a few thoughts...

i just cant get over how stupid these three idiots are!

a f'ing garden on top of a bus? it is probably for growing their weed that they seem to be always smoking.

these three bozo's remind me so much of these pack of pseudo intellectuals that would come into the restaurant where i was serving and bussing tables as i was getting my bachelors then masters. this was when ethiopia was still showing pictures of their starving people...with emphasis on the kids with kwashiorkor. anyway, the nimrods while sipping their latte's would say in a fake british accent 'oh, look at the poor starving kids. well, the solution is obvious...they need to eat. if they are starving, eat'.

i wish i was making this up. i wish i was this creative...but sadly, i am not. these stupid ding dongs were totally serious. they had no freaking clue on what the situation was like yet they had an answer for it. does this scenario sound familiar?

the morons on the show are so unskilled at being hosts and drawing out the best of the inventor and their inventions...i am pretty sure a quadruple amputee blind deaf and retarded chimp could do a better job than those three guys.

i think the last time i saw a vehicle with vegetation coming out of the top was the garbage truck dumping my usual 300 pounds of green waste to be used as compost...wait a sec...i am paying someone to take away my clippings etc and they in turn make money off of that. now, that is SMART!!! having a f'ing piece of dirt on top of your vehicle is not smart. it ranks up there with jim carrey talking out of his butt!
