Maggie is the lone elephant of Alaska's Anchorage Zoo. She lost her companion elephant 10 years ago and has been living alone in a climate foreign to her nature. An elephant needs to be with other elephants. A "Free Maggie" group has formed in Alaska. Here is an excerpt from an article found on the Kenai Peninsula Clarion newspaper website: "The Free Maggie group said in a flier that it wants Maggie to be placed where she can live 'without the threat of frost bitten ears, arthritis, foot rot, depression and boredom that commonly afflict elephants living in northern climates.'
Maggie arrived at the zoo in 1983 as a baby. She has been alone since December 1997, when the zoo's other elephant died of a foot infection at age 33." I think she should be with other elephants in a better climate!
