Greetings,

As you may or may not know there was a great event in Berlin this past January. A polar bear was born in captivity for the first time in 30 years. they named him Knut.

The Birth of Knut

This little bear has won the hearts of a great deal of people in Germany and elsewhere in the world. The Mayor loves him, the Berlin Ice Hockey team wants to make him their mascot. He has had pictures taken of him as a celebrity. So, all should be secured for his survival in the Berlin Zoo right?

I am sad to say..wrong.

It would appear that as of today (March 19, 2007) another article was recently released in which some so called animal rights activists feel that he should be killed because he has been brought up by human hands.

Activists claim the zoo needs to kill Knut.

This...disgusted me. Knut is of an endangered species and people have put a lot of love and work into ensuring the survival of this little guy.

Although the article goes on to state that it is unlikely to happen, Germany's track record for such things has not been good as you can see from the fate of Hugo the Sloth in Leipzig or of course the tale of the border traveling Bruno the Bear in 2006.

Bruno's Story

The issue at hand is not if it will happen but rather who gives activists the right to put pressure on Berlin to do so.

Knut is healthy, happy and well cared for. I consider this a great injustice to all who are painstakingly doing all they can to save the Polar Bear population.

This is a post of awareness for those who may not know about what is happening in other places in the world. Something needs to be done to ensure that we are not responsible for wiping out species merely because of moral issues.

These animals must be protected as in the wild they will not survive. Knut has become a celebrity in Germany for his rareness and his integrity to survive even after his mother rejected him.

Speak out my friends, voice your support against this injustice in the guise of "preservation"! Let us show Knut and his keepers and caregivers that they are not alone in their objection to this!

Thank you for your time and your attention.
