The original is by The Kingston Trio (1958), the Beach Boys took it 8 years later and changed it a little and voila! A hit!

"The Wreck of the "John B" (Traditional; adapted and arranged by Hays-Sandburg-Waihall) Lee Hays of The Weavers adapted this old folk tune from the Bahamas from a version in poet Carl Sandburg's 1927songbook The American Songbag. The Kingston Trio's version, true to its calypso roots, is from their first LP in 1958. Then, eight years later, The Beach Boys changed the title to "Sloop John B," altered the lyrics and walked away with a No. 3 hit. But their debt to the Trio goes far beyond one song: The Beach Boys adopted the group's striped, short-sleeved shirts and wholesome persona as well."

and PS: Sloop is a boat in Dutch.

Just a quick question, might be stupid, but is this the same song they were singing at the end of Jaws, when they were all getting drunk? It sounds different from the commerical but I think it's the same.

The song sung in the scene where they are getting drunk is Show me the way to go home. Kind of different. I write in showing my support, and glad i am not the only one searching to find this song. I hope the discovery channel releases a CD. Good songs are used on this show.

I'm in....i heard this song a couple of weeks ago for the new season of Deadliest Catch. Very moving and would love a copy. I to have searched Limewire and others and nothing...to new? However Amazon.com does sell a collection of their cd's and there are some interesting songs redone by the boys. Such as they have a "pop" cd out where they sing Metallic's "Nothing Else Matter," Celine Dions Titanic "My Heart Will Go On," and many others you may recognize.....check it out you can listen, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006I0BI/sr=8-3/qid=...018?%5Fencoding=UTF8

They also do a moving version of Eric Claptons "Tears in Heaven".

Anyways lets hope Discovery puts out the copy!

I am currently sifting through 46 different versions of this song. None of them are by the Vienna Boys Choir, but if I see anything that sounds close I'll keep you all updated. In the meantime someone at the DC seriously needs to consider a friggin soundtrack or something. They keep digging up these insanely good songs no one can find. If we push this topic as much as the "Run to you" fiasco I think we might get somewhere.

I've been looking for it for weeks too..

Still Empty handed!

I'd pay for an MP3 Download if I could figure out exactly who is singing it.

Okay,

I emailed Discovery asking them to verify that the Vienna Boys Choir sings this version and is the version used for Deadliest Catch.

the response I recieved was:

So this basically does not help, but I have obtained a phone number and will be contacing Discovery Communications tommorrow to actualy speak to someone and see if I can get an answer.

I still believe it is Vienna Boys Choir, but maybe it is not, if we can get a straight answer then maybe it will be easier to find.

Will post results tommorrow,
Tim

Hey, it's great that they at least got back to us! So, maybe now the thing to do is ask either the Indiana Choir or the Vienna Choir to do a pop music CD and include it, LOL!

Great!

it is good to get down to what choir sang this version. so scratch the phone call to Discovery tommorrow. I have contacted the Indiana Boys Choir to verify that they did this recording and if so maybe they would be wiling to do a full recording if they were to find out that it was in demand and maybe they could make some $ off of it.

If they are interested in such a thing i will provide a direct contact and pre-warn them that many will be putting in requests.

Will let you guys know what they tell me!

That would be cool. Cool I find it funny that they only recorded 30 seconds of the song. It's not that long, LOL!

Okay,

I recieved an email back from the Assistant Professor of Music Education for the Indiana Boys Choir asking if he can confirm they were commissioned to do this 30 sec recording and he says:

If they did do this, it was before [he] was a part of the organization
(5 years ago).

So....maybe I have the wrong Indiana Boys Choir?

Sorry, guys,

You're right -- it was the Indianapolis Children's Choir. Truly a world-class group, they've performed at the White House, Pan-Am Games, Carnegie Hall and had just returned from a trip to Moscow prior to Discovery working with them.

Thanks for the interest, and I'll tell you, Sherlock Holmes has nothing on y'all.
