Pres, for what it's worth, I don't believe for a moment that you meant anything snarky toward motherputz' son personally, and I understood what you were trying to say. Good grief, you don't even know him, so why on earth would you say something like that directed toward him! Kids his age are usually pimplyfaced and emptypocketed! In general! It's a shame she took it in a way you didn't mean, but I know for myself, sometimes things just hit you the wrong way, and that's that. Have your snit and get over it. That's what I try to do, at least.
unfortunately, it seems that some forget that hair can only be cut when you go to a hairdresser, unless you get extensions. what nick does is usually take off all the dead, heavy, body-less hair that NEEDS to be cut off. nick does his best to make every woman look their best, and who says short hair isn't sexy? as long as the contributor's happy with their hair, it really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

You're absolutely right. It's awfully easy for someone to come on here and slam Nick for what they don't like, but if they were in his shoes, I think they'd find out things are just a little bit harder than they say. Nick has dozens and dozens of clients, so I don't think he's too worried about what an amateur has to say about his work.

What does it mean that some forget that hair can only be cut when you go to a hairdresser?
It seems like a lot of the people on the show keep their hair long out of habit...they don't get it trimmed a lot and don't really have a style. Well-cared for long hair looks really nice on some people (I really like the long hair with straight bangs look!).
Personally, I like shorter hair for me. I straight mid-back length hair for a few years. I looked and felt like a little girl. I cut it all off a few months ago and it was so liberating! I didn't feel like I "lost my sexuality" or femininity or anything...if anything I feel more sexy and confident. It's kind of shaggy at the moment (my hair grows seriously fast), but I'm getting it cut (and highlighted for the first time!) later this week and I'm excited.
dancingstarr, i mean that you can only make hair get shorter with scissors, you can't magically make it grow longer. and generally, in order to change into a new hairstyle, you need to get rid of the old, dried out, unhealthy stuff before you make way for a newer, healthier style to take its place.
I too haven't liked most of the haircuts and some of the color on the show. The young women, with the bright red hair, that got really bright, was a good example.
I looked up Nicks profile, and I have no doubt that he is an exceptional stylist. I just don't like what he does on the show.
Short or long...either way for me. My wife has had both.
I don't know if I am lacking some piece of DNA or something but every time someone on the show or in real life makes a big deal out of getting their hair cut I scream--really out loud scream! I have no attachment to my hair or color--if I went in there and Nick said--how about shaving it off except for bangs and dying them blue--I would say "wow that's weird" but would do it and not cry or worry or fret about it.
I always here women saying "my husband likes it long" ect ect and I think to myself if my husband said that to me it would be enough to make me want to cut it pixie short..I do things for myself not anyone else.
In the end I think that all of the cuts have been better than what they walked in with..maybe not exactly what I would have thought looked best but better.
you know, I've had long long hair, short hair, medium hair and I get so tired of people equating hair with their sexuality and that it's so freaking important. It'll grow back!
and I'm certainly glad that my exes thought I was sexy no matter how long my hair was.
Nick is doing those women a favour by getting them out of their "long hair" boxes and giving them a new style. Most of these women, even if their hair was cut, it was given a better shape and looked about 100% healthier than before.
This was reallyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy boring to read. Next time can we all exude this type of energy somewhere else? Maybe volunteering? Or exercising? Or working? Or shopping at WalMart? (Just kidding on that one). Key word for me on this is would be YAWN.
I hope to see all of you posting stuff that is more relevant to the show in the future. This was u.g.l.y!

You are a lady of many talents and interests--cooking, music, literature. I love them all too.
And find a lady who sounds like me. Drop a message directly to me, and I'll tell you a bit more of my work here in England. Primarily, I'm an Anglican historical theologian.
ps--I also played oboe in high school and university, and I lived in Wisconsin (Milwaukee, so not near you) for 6 years.

I'm sort of at a loss at how this relates to fashion. What are you wearing while you are cooking and taking the trash out? Or better yet, what outfit will you don to enjoy dinner with your family?

This is true...very, true from what we see on the show as well.
I need to apologize to my short haired sisters. I was kind of venting and going on more of a train of thought than trying to offend, but offend I did. I really am sorry for hurting some of you. I do feel that some people look better with short hair (Mariska Hargitay for one!) and when I said 'If you're a hottie, then this theory doesn't apply,' I basically was saying 'if you can pull it off and be sexy, then this theory goes out the window....and that includes hotties who are 95 years old...I knew one woman from church who was just stunning with short hair and she was in her 80's). That's what I meant anyway, but it didn't come out right. Some people do look bad with long hair as well. I was thinking of cutting off a couple of inches to even out the length myself. I just didn't like the blanket attitude that seems to prevail that women automatically look better and younger with shorter hair. If that is the case, then nobody should have it.
As one of the shorter haired people, no offense taken. I mostly agree with noodnix - don't treat hair like a festish, try something new, it will grow back!
I wasn't offended in the least either, minasmom. Why would I be? You weren't insulting me or my short hair! We all have our own opinions, and that's what makes things interesting. I mean, how boring would it be if we all agreed with everything everyone says on here? Dull, dull, dull. My bone structure is such that short hair suits me best, and I know there are lots of ladies here whose bone structure is best suited by long hair. It should not get to the point that the two posters got to earlier where it got really personal. It's just hair, not rocket science.

VAVA
Technically, vava, motherputz' post has nothing to do with the original thread. However, a couple of posters got into a mudslinging match - it got reeeeeeeeeeally ugly - and motherputz diplomatically tried to steer the conversation in another direction. It looks like Ivy was here and deleted the flaming posts, so motherputz' post does look really out of place if you didn't read the ugly bits that were here earlier.
Yup, exactly what I was trying to do. I will gladly delete the previous one in order to avoid looking like a total lunatic.
That's why I inquired about there being a full moon; the thread did spark a lot of lively debate, but I still don't understand why it spun off into the ball of flame that it did. I admit, I laughed my head off at the two posters who were going at it verbally, but at the same time, I just couldn't understand how these two ladies who don't even know each other, could cut so deeply. We all fly off the handle and say foolish things we don't necessarily mean once we cool off, but these two took it to an entirely new level. I don't remember the last I time I read anything so ugly.
A dear friend of mine told me once that "Anger takes a lot of engergy. Frankly, it can be used to better ends." I try to live by that and it is amazing what you can accomplish and enjoy when you do.
In fact, I think I'll go do my nails and maybe even get my hair cut! (Don't touch that one! It's a joke!!!)
I missed what happened because I went off to work, but clearly my early efforts at calming things down didn't work! Unfortunately, there are swome personalities who seek out and feed on conflict. I have to especially wonder about someone who signs on to the board for the first time and goes after someone.
I think Nick does a good job on many of the MO's, but I agree that he tends to cut way too much hair off. I have very long hair myself, and when it starts to look "scraggly" it's amazing what a 1 or 2 inch trim can make. It somehow makes all of my hair look so much healthier! The same goes for when I trim both of my daughters' long hair.
A deep conditioning treatment can work wonders as well.
It's really not necessary to take 10 or 12 inches off, unless that's what the MO wants of course. Not everyone looks good with the short 'soccer mom' cut.
Nick is a professional, but he doesn't seem to have very much experience with the styling and care of long hair.
I think most everyone is missing the point that it's not just about the hair when you get a cut. It's about personality, face structure, coloring, maintainance, and sometimes body type etc. It doesn't matter if an mo's hair is long and healthy - if it doesn't look good with those factors mentioned above...then you have to cut it! There are plenty of times where he has not cut off people's hair at their request. I have worked on tv sets before, you can't really think that they give the consultation right on camera and then just chop off all of the hair. It's all carefully planned out before hand. The sign of a good stylist is someone that creates something that works for you, not just tv. I think Nick is about timeless cuts - especially for wntw, isn't that what stacey and clinton are trying to achieve with the clothes as well?? Timeless - I think that is the key word for this show.
As I have said before in another posting, I am a client in Nick's salon. He cut my hair the first time. He definitely has experience with long hair, because he said he would never cut mine short (It's below my shoulder blades). He shaped it really nice, and did an awesome blow out. He mentioned that my hair was very healthy and suited me very well so there wasn't any need for major change.
For the most part, what I have seen on the show (and other shows) is long hair makes a mature woman look older. But yes, short styles can do the same on some people. I think that the show is about major change, and these mo's are definitely in need. The less chance they have to throw their hair in a bun or pony the better!
The gorgeous girl from Utah, Camilla, Nick didn't go crazy cutting her hair short. Like you said he did with yours, makeupforever, he shaped it nicely, and even she said it looked great. Some people just think women look better in long hair, whether they really do or not. "Better" is a subjective word, but I have never seen Nick cut anyone's hair who didn't look better for it. Part of cosmetology is knowing face shapes and what looks best with those shapes. He has big client base, and they can't all be wrong!
What's the biggest reason the MOs give at the start of the show? It's usually the lack of time to invest in their appearance. IMO, Nick works with that perceived time crunch to create styles that they can duplicate at home. Yes, he cuts hair to frame the face, give it shape, definition, even curl.
They aren't cutting edge styles, they're the kind of cuts and styles that can be done at home. As far as cutting long hair, it's not like he's making them go from waist length to pixie short.
I think it's nice that he doesn't get too elaborate. I used to get my hair "done" and then it looked bad the next day because I don't have two more hands and eyes in the back of my head.

Although I very much agree with the posts that say people with long hair are highly pressured with cutting their hair. I love long hair. But you do make a very valid point! Some of the MO's do say they don't want to spend much time on their hair. So maybe that is why he does mostly the shorter cuts. Not that I have changed my opinion, but you do make a good point.
I had long hair for most of my life. I took care of it (weekly deep-conditioning treatments, trims) and it was healthy and shiny.
BUT...it was long for too long. I got it cut on a whim at a funky salon when I was on vacation in New Orleans when I was in my early 30's.
A talented stylist can see what kind of cut/color will emphasize your beauty. I went from very long hair with blond highlights to a razor-cut shoulder-length style, colored red.
The transformation was incredible.
The cannot understand the women that sit and cry just thinking about cutting their hair.
I've never seen anyone on WNTW that had beautiful long hair. It's always been frizzy, with split ends, and not flattering at all. If anything, it made them look haggard and older.
I don't think the pressure is to cut "long hair". The pressure is to cut the bad, dry, dead hair, and try something new that will flatter your features.
It grows back. I should know, I grew my hair out for my wedding. You hair should grow 6 inches a year, so you can see how quickly it grows back, but also how SLOWLY the growth appears when the ends are dry and split. The hair still grows from the scalp, but it breaks off at the end.
Agreeing to go on the show is agreeing to allow a transformation. It's not like they dye it blue or shave your head.
I was in the supermarket one day and I was walking down the greeting card isle. There was a lady looking at some of the cards. I don't know how old she was maybe in her 20s. She was probably between 5'2" and 5'4" tall. This is no exageration, her hair was completely down to her ankles. It was absolutely gorgeous. This was a few years ago. She was probably the envy of the whole store. I have had my hair long and short through out my life. But I prefer long hair on me. I see short styles on some people and think , wow that is really cute. But I know it would never look good on me. I don't know if any salons do this but I was thinking of an idea. It would be cool if they had wigs of different lengths, styles and colors for their clients to try on to see what would look good on them!
Sometimes I think that he should cut some of the long hair just because its not a good shape for their face and he wants to make them look more beautiful and thats understandable. Thats just my opinion, but not everyone needs to cut their hair, He should give them a choice and if they agree with Nick, then the MO's should give a range in length of what they would be happy with.

I agree kh! They really should listen to what the person feels comfortable with. All long hair isn't beautiful but he should try to give those people the best longer cut that he can. He seems to be scissor crazy.
have you honestly seen a show yet where there isn't a woman who thinks cutting her own hair is the best way to go because they don't want to pay a professional to do it? have you honestly seen a show where a woman's mane is really gorgeous? I haven't. Most of those women have tired, worn, washed out hair. Most of them look absolutely drop dead gorgeous once Nick's done with them.

Youre points are good. I had a college classmate that had breathtaking hair that was past her waist and she took meticulous care of it. It also looked good on her face. Years later I ran into her and her hair was shoulder length. I asked her why she went with the shorter look. She told me that she was almost thirty years older now and the longer hair drew attention to her jowls and underchin ( I didn't see either, she was still slender), but she did and that was what was important.
I do have one question though to Jo-mi-sc - When you described the woman in the store, you never said what she looked like. I'll bet the hair was beautiful, but I can also wear a dress that was made by Vera Wang and it will be breathtaking, but what will you remember -me or the dress?

Just a thought....[/QUOTE] Hi Motherputz. The woman was stunning! She had a beautiful face. She had a great figure. She probably weighed between 100-110 LBS. She had a very neat and clean appearance. She was dressed very trendy. Cute jeans, a cute top and heels. This was about 4 years ago that I saw her. Her hair was just so beautiful. It was very healthy. Very shiny and no dry or split ends. Just an overall beautiful woman. I like my hair, but I wish I had her hair genes. lol.

Everyone should try some different at least once.
Cet_tic. that's my experience and I absolutely, totally agree! The first time I cut my waist length hair, it was due to extraordinary circumstances (going to live in a country without indoor plumbing)Every time since then - it just looks better and it gives me options. If you make a mistake (mine was a too-curly perm)- it does grow.
I don't post often, but this subject just irritates me. Yes, some women look better with shorter hair. Fine. And some women look better with longer hair--regardless of their age. As long as it is taken care of and shaped properly for one's face that is all that matters--long or short.
I've been watching WNTW for years and for the most part, Nick tends to cut a woman's long hair short if she's over 30 and/or married. Perhaps that's due to needed ease in the morning. I don't know. Personally, when I had shorter hair (just above the shoulder), I spent far more time on it in the morning than I do now with long hair. I resent the cultural push we have for a woman to cut her hair off after a certain age. And, though I'm sure Nick is a lovely person, he is a part of the problem here.
And for those of you whose answer is that "it grows back"--yes, that's fine for shorter hair. But when you want long hair and you want to keep it healthy with regular trims, growing it out takes a LONG time. Those 6 inches per year just is not enough when you want to go from short to long. Trust me. I know.
The people who say "it's just hair, it will grow back, blah blah blah" have obviously never spent years trying to grow their hair long before.
I have very thick, wavy hair, so shorter styles would definitely take a lot more time for me to care for. Not all of us have the time or desire to use blow dryers and flat irons. Even if I wanted to use them, they would totally wreck my hair, forcing me to keep it super short, which would look dreadful on me.
I do not like most of Nick's styles to begin with, but after seeing what he did to that poor girl Natalie's hair tonite there is NO WAY I would EVER let that man near my head!!
The people who say "it's just hair, it will grow back, blah blah blah" have obviously never spent years trying to grow their hair long before.
wrongo bongo. There are many of us out there that have had long hair, cropped it off and grown it out again. Because I most definitely have. And my hair is curly, so it takes that much longer to get it "long"
It just hair. it doesn't define who you are as a human being.
Again, Nick doesn't cut long hair shorter, just for the sake of cutting it shorter. He's doing it to give them a proper style that is healthy that they can take care of easily.
I've never seen him cut a woman's hair uber short if it was curly or excessively wavy (with the exception of dreadlock girl - there was absolutely no choice with her hair). He deliberately keeps longer wavy/curly hair - long...ie at least to the shoulders or longer.
I guess it's just my opinion but Nick does seem to want everyone to have short hair. My question is, if short hair is so wonderful, why is Stacy and Carmendie's hair long?

Wow, Noodnix, you just explained why we like to keep our hair long, too.

The way Nick's hair is looking right now, I wouldn't let him come near my hair. He is the perfect example of what not to do with hair when you get older. It doesn't make him look younger or "hipper". It looks terrible. He's such a cutie, otherwise, and probably a nice guy. He just doesn't practice what he preaches.
As for long hair for women, it's a matter of personal taste. It may not look great on them, but if they are comfortable with it, and not using it as a security blanket, then good for them. However, I did see a lady in the grocery store one day who had thick, wavy hair to her ankles, and another customer commented to me, "Gee, that would be like wearing a blanket on your back all the time". This came from a man, so not all men find long hair attractive or sexy, especially at that extreme.
My hair is short, though not extreme. I had wanted to get it cut for quite awhile, but was picky about the style. Being stick-straight, it had to be workable for me. I finally found a picture in a catalog that I showed my stylist, and asked if it would work for me. She was honest and said that it would with some adjustments, then explained it to me. We did it and it's great. You have to be able to work with a stylist to get the right thing. If the stylist won't work with you or be honest, then find another one. I've done it more than once.
i would love to see more long hair styles. i think if a woman wants to keep her length, that should be honored, besides, there is more to long hair than just straight across cuts. layers and bangs add so much to long hairstyles.
More often than not, the women who are wearing their hair long--by their OWN admmission--are doing so because it is a security blanket, they think it makes them look younger(99% of the time it acutally ages them), and they don't care for it and it has split ends, and is frizzy beyond belief, and more importantly, beyond attractiveness.
I do think Nick does need to let someone else do his hair. I don't like the looks he's been sporting the last two or three years.
I think Nick's hairstyles are lazy. I have seen too many shows where he just scrunches women's hairstyles which is something I might have done in high school. The colors used to dye most of the womens hair is sometimes so close to their current hair color, it does nothing to bring out their face. Most of his haircuts are very unflattering to the face shapes of the women. They need to change the hairstylist. I feel bad for some of the women that come off this show
I just saw one tonite (Sunday) in the marathon reruns (she was the single mother of 2-Bachelorette) who didn't want to cut her hair. Nick told her he had to cut off the damaged hair. He really gave her a lot of length and when she turned around she looked absolutely delighted. Nick had to spend a great deal time trying to straighten it, return it to its natural color (which is easier to maintain), and put some real shine into it. I thought it look wonderful!
