I've only just recently watched a few episodes of WNTW, and it seems as if even women that never, ever wear dresses or wear makeup end up in them by the end of the show, and some of them look mighty uncomfortable. Isn't it possible to be a stylish dresser without dresses, heels, and makeup?

It's good to try new things. Otherwise, we'd never learn anything new and make improvements. That being said, it IS possible to look stylish without a single dress or skirt in the wardrobe.
The only MO I have every seen forced into a dress- when they REALLY disliked them was Cheyenne. She wore a medium on top, but a size 16 on the bottom. IMO, she was absolutely RIGHT in her assessment that dresses were not as flattering and pants.
But she was very gracious about giving it a try!

I agree with ImPicks. If you absolutely refuse to try on a dress, a thong, a cashmere sweater etc. you'll never know if it works for you or not. It also makes for a more interesting show when the contributor models a variety of outfits. Seeing just trousers or trouser jeans in all 3 reveal outfits would get kind of boring.

I think, since it is a makeover show, they have to at least try to get the non-dress wearers into one or two, for the drama factor if nothing else. It just makes for more interesting television. Plus, it adds variety to your wardrobe, which is one thing S&C like to see. However, is it necessary to have dresses to be stylish - probably not.

I agree. If you saw the episode with Megan Slankard, the singer/songwriter, she refused to buy any dresses or skirts and still had a versatile wardrobe for all occasions.

I believe we need to reconsider this whole comfort thing. I agree we shouldn't be dying in an outfit but at the same time what is wrong with putting a bit of effort out. I am tired of going to Nordstroms and seeing people in pajama bottoms and flip flops. Have some pride, would a pair of kitten heels and a little wrap dress kill a person?

I had to smile because I am sitting here in a jersey wrap dress (leaving for church in a few minutes) and it is very comfortable. Jeans, on the other hand, can be stiff, and the crotch seam can pull when you sit in them. In both cases, it's the fit and individual garment's construction that determines whether it's comfortable. I agree, if you are going to have a MAKE OVER then you need to try things. Otherwise it's not a makeover. PS - I wear pants more than 90% of the time.

The point of the show is the "expand one's comfort zone."
And...more to the point...few women can go through life without having to attend a few functions that really do call for a dress...such as a wedding, funeral, baptism, bar mitzvah, graduation, etc. Women who show up at such functions in pants (unless disabled and in a wheel chair) tend to look like they are disrespecting the occasion.
And..good heavens...dresses are more comfortable than pant suits anyway!!!! and...way cooler!!!

I am very "dress phobic" too, but with the great styles they are showing right now, with the empire wastes that flatter nearly all figures, I can't wait to have some extra money to invest in one!

I wore a pants suit to my grandmothers wedding and saw many others do the same. Dresses are no longer "required" wear at funerals, weddings, church or baptisms.

Of course it's possible to be stylish without being in a dress! However, I think the point that they're trying to make by putting all of these women into dresses when they've never been in a dress before is to show them that dresses aren't so bad, and that it gives them more options when getting dresses each morning. I think a lot of those women don;t wear them because they think dresses are too frilly and girly, when in reality, some dresses are the complete opposite!

It's called expand your horizon and go beyond your comfort level, not "force". Dress is a very feminine piece of clothing. S & C never FORCE anyone. I remember a firefighter woman who looks/dresses totally like a college boy. Stacy asked "how feminine do you want to be? how far are you willing to take it? Will you consider a dress?" and the MO replied, "i'm willing to give it a shot and see how it goes." That is a very good attitude.

I notice the originator of this thread only made one post and then has been silent. But for those who are asking themselves this question, all the other posters have made it obvious. A complete wardrobe needs variety. I get men in my store all the time who say, "I never wear a suit." I just look at them and ask, "So you never attend weddings or funerals?" Just as a man should have one or two suits in his closet for weddings and funerals, women should have some dresses as well. There are occasions when slacks are not appropriate. Even when you're a tourist in Rome, they do not permit women in pants or shorts to enter the Vatican. (That may have changed, but the last time I heard about it, about 8 years ago, that was still in effect.) They don't feel it's respectful. So some enterprising Italian business men have made a killing off selling paper skirts for women to gain access to the Vatican.

Stacy and Clinton always want the MO to step outside her comfort zone and try new things, at least for the week she's in NYC. With the possible exception of one or two ladies, they've all liked things they'd never worn before or never thought about wearing before. As far as the makeup, if you've ever had a makeover at a department store makeup counter, at some point, they almost always ask if they can really go to town and do you up good (at least that's been my experience!). You don't have to ever wear the look again, but it's fun to see something totally different than what you might be used to. We don't know if the ladies kept up the makeup tips Carmindy taught them, but she at least showed them what's possible.

I think there are occasions where most if not all women should wear a dress and for that reason, putting them in a dress is entirely appropriate for the purposes of a makeover. For some women, those occasions may be few and far between, but they should know how to dress for them anyway.

Sorry to digress but that's not true. Women are allowed to wear pants to Vatican, they are not allowed to show their knees or bare shoulders. So short skirts or dresses are a no-no as well as shorts.

When I did my show last year, I normally do not wear dresses either, only once in a while. However, the show is a "Make-over" show, so if you never wore make up or do your hair regularly or get dressed up for some occasion, this is what THIS show is all about. Its all about style, fashion, the "modern" look. People get stuck in a rut (myself included) and they tend to stay that way, never trying anything new. This show will put you in make- up- if you are a die hard fan you know that some MO's that never wore make-up ever- Carmindy will not put alot of make up on you- she will give you neutral colors just enough to enhance your eyes or lips which I think is "OK". When you shop for clothes most of the MO's rules and regulations are to find something dressy and casual, work wear and evening or occasion wear. This dosent necessarily mean you HAVE to dress like this all the time. The show is about FASHION-NY STYLE!! Of course not EVERYONE dresses like what you see on the show. I certainly dont- Its a year later and I still have my hairstyle and I dress "What Not To Wear" Style for my job. At home and on the weekends, if I dont have an occasion to dress up for or I am not going anywhere- I dress like I did before my make over- WHY?? because its comfortable. Jeans, or sweats and t-shirts and sweatshirts. I am not going to wear dress pants or high heels to clean my house or go food shopping or do the laundry in stylish looking clothes because that just not comfortable for me !! They want to put you in a dress if youve never worn one before to show you- choices that you may never have made before. I always wore all black all the time because I never thought I looked good in bold colors or patterns. Now I check everything out in the dressing room when I go clothes shopping- this is what Stacy and Clinton taught me to do. My style now is alittle more modern but still with some of the "old" me. You do your show and then its your own choice if you want to continue to keep you make ove rlook or not. Nothing is set in stone forever. SOme MO's- the make over just does not fit their life style when they get back home. There are ways to adjust, but if they choose to go back to they way they were before, then so be it. At least they agreed to go on the show and "try". I had a freakin awesome time when I did my show, I learned a hell of alot about fashion. Stacy & Clinton gave me many many tips on camera and off camera. What I choose to do with that advice is my own decision as all of the other MO's. Its just a great NY experience. Not everyone in NY dresses to the "nines" either. Hell, I could never afford the prices of the clothes I bought in Manhattan. My jeans are $200.00. I usually buy my jeans in Walmart! I have an Ann Klein pant suit thats $300.00. I dont think I ever spent $300.00 on my whole wardrobe hahahaha. But I can shop modern in Walmart or other discount stores and find clothes for my style for much more affordable prices. Stacy made fun of my "plastic" pumps I bought in Payless. I thought that was freakin hilarious, however, I dont make Stacy's salary to buy the shoes that I bought on the show, so I continue to shop in Payless. I do what I can to keep my style. Again it was an awesome experiene, a once in a lifetime dream come true for me and I loved every minute of it.

Lynnann, your episode was one of my all time favorites. You were so funny, yet so cooperative and willing to try things you weren't used to buying or wearing. I actually got tears in my eyes when they showed your reveals, because you looked so freakin' great! And Nick gave you one of my all time favorite hairstyles too. I'm really glad to hear you're keeping up with the rules, although I completely agree that sometimes sweats/jeans and tops are not only more comfortable for a particular occasion, but more appropriate.

Lynnann, I remember your episode. You are an inspiration. I think you got out of the experience exactly what Stacy and Clinton would have wanted you to get out of it. I don't think they expect you to afford $200 jeans, but the lessons learned from having shopped for and worn those clothes can be transferred back into your "real life" to fit your lifestyle within your budget. Thanks for posting!
