He consistently makes women look bad. It's hard to tell if he's doing it on purpose or if he really has such bad taste and judgment. He gives every single woman the same bad haircut - a chin-length bob - which is dated, boring, and looks bad on everyone, especially those women who are weight conscious and want their faces to appear thinner. Isn't that just hairdressing 101? If I see one more beautiful woman with long gorgeous hair get it whacked off by Nick the Butcher again, I'm just going to cry. The last episode I saw, he made this very attractive woman look like a drag queen. What a drag!
Stacey, Clinton, and Carmindy all have such good taste. Why can't the producers find a hairstylist that compliments them?
Hi, I totally agree with lindsay 1, maybe if we say how bad Nick is over and over again they will get rid of him and get someone who actually has an imagination. I really pitty these poor women, all he does is the bob a shorter version a longer version on every single woman.
Well, if there is a general consensus that he is terrible, perhaps the producers will get wise and replace him.
I don't care about being "negative." It is called criticism and that is what these message boards are for. I am a frequent viewer and consumer. I love the show and enjoy Stacy, Clinton, and Carmindy. They are all quite talented. But thank you for being the voice of TV show message board experience and the arbiter of "positivity."
How original. Like this has never been said before.
Have a look around. You've only said again, and no more originally, than what more people than grains of sand on the beach have said.
Congratulations.
Oh, yeah. Welcome, as you're another newbie whose first post has to be so negative.

Or maybe you'll just annoy the daylights out of everyone who has had to read this conversation 1,859 times.
No one cares what you or I or anyone else on this forum thinks. All they care about--and all they SHOULD care about--is what the MO's think. I would say at least 80% of the time, they are happy, and I'm being rather generous about that. I can't believe there are so many people here who are self-absorbed enough to think that their opinions matter enough to get a man fired from his job. If he wasn't a good hairdresser, people would not pay $500 a pop to see him. He would not own his own studio. If he's not to your liking, then don't go to him. Change the channel during his segment. Just PLEASE stop whining. Couldn't you guys have just latched on to an already existing thread? Why do you have to start the same conversation, almost verbatim, EVERY WEEK? Do you think it's because you're all "right?" Do you think it's because he's just so bad that it warrants all your vitriol and protest? Give me a break. The louder you scream, the more annoying you are. That's the only result of this conversation. Every week people whine, and every week Nick comes back. GIVE UP ALREADY. Or if you want to keep complaining, email Discovery or TLC directly. But you won't get anywhere here. And if you did, would you really feel good about it? Would you be happy getting him fired? And what happens when the new hair stylist comes and a whole new crop of people show up to discuss how much THEY all hate his work?
FYI--not that this will likely have an impact on your opinion--Nick consults with each MO days before the actual haircut and they agree on what to do. You have no idea what happens during that conversation, so I reiterate: your opinion does not matter. Mine does not either, which is why I have not stated it here. Change the channel or stop watching, but for pete's sake, stop complaining.
I'm sorry but I have no qualms about being rude anymore. This is getting ridiculous.
Alizareen, you said it. This board will always have the crybabies who wail every week about the same old tired subject. Nick hasn't hit a home run every time, but daggone, I don't think he deserves such ugly people moaning about how they hate him. New posters are just too lazy to check to see if there is another thread about what they're posting for, they have to be, otherwise all the boo-hooers would keep the same tired old subject alive that nobody gives a flying cr*p about. They're just not willing to concede that he has done great work in the past. Their problem.

And before any of these 'can't take what they dish' types go moaning about 'you don't know what I look like'--it's ugly attitude, not necessarily ugly appearance. Jumping on with your first post being hate mail is ugly.
Who hits a home run every time in any line of work, anyway?
When any of these 'critics' can do a better job, and combine that with a better on-camera personality, I'll listen to their 'criticism'. Until then, it's just moaning, and needing something to feel superior about. How sad is that?

People are just so sick and tired of reading the same old cr*p by the crybabies who complain about the same old thing every week. Surely you can figure that out for yourself after reading most of these posts. It's ollllllllld news, get over it.
I really like Nick. I think he takes into account MO's personality. Some people love wild color or style and some people really cling to their original style. Considering it is the first time he ever met the MO and he is going for a "make over" look, I think he does a great job. I felt so bad for him with Lynn. She wouldn't let him touch her hair. IT IS HAIR- IT WILL GROW BACK! I would always be open to try a new look.
I just about went bald the summer between my junior and senior years in high school. Bald teenage girls are not happy people. But you know what? I lived.
If the worst thing that happens to someone is they have a bad haircut, or one they don't like (there's a difference), I can't get too wound up.
I can't believe people are so uptight about another post that they have to reply with such ridiculous cooments. This is a forum, people post their views and opinions. Whoopity doo!! I for one think he's a horrible hair stylist as well. If I see him do one more wet to dry curly bob. ewwww....

But think about the people who are on the show in the first place. 90% seem like they want to put as little effort as possible into their look. The we to dry curly bob happens to be a simple cut that you don't have to do too much with.
Thus far I haven't come across a single worthwhile response from the Nick-hating group to what I wrote. Seems some people just exist to whine and complain.
Who died and made you queen/king of the message boards or are you a preacher? <--that's a real gem though. I like these kinds of responses because they save me the time I would otherwise have to dedicate to writing a meaningful response
I know what you're saying; it doesn't matter who posts things that make so much sense that the whiners should read and realize that their point of view and hateful comments just don't make sense. It makes them happy to complain all the time and they're simply bound and determined to spew their ridiculous comments because they can. I say we just start ignoring them. Trying to get them to understand another point of view is like talking to a rock anyway. You simply cannot get beyond their tunnel vision.
Since this is a board for posting our opinions, I will post mine. I have been on many chat boards for over 10 years now and I have to say that I have never seen one like this where there are "regulars" that have been here for years that expect every person who comes here out of the blue to look up old threads before they voice their opinion. I have honestly never heard of this practice before. I don't see people can be expected to know what the "protocol" is here if they have only just signed on. I have never seen a list of "rules" telling people to look up old threads before posting. Perhaps I just never took the time to look for it, but just how or why should someone new be expected to know what the old timers on the board think is the "norm"? Because it's not the norm on other boards, I can tell you that. I just think that some people don't like this person's opinion, and that's fine, you can disagree politely, but don't go cutting them down for not doing something that is really quite out of the ordinary in the chat group world and call them all sorts of derogatory names because of it (i.e., "whiners"). They have no idea how common their opinion is. And perhaps they think that if they post their opinion someone at TLC might be listening to it, so they have a right to voice it, even if it is repetitive. My advice to anyone who doesn't like hearing repetitive opinions is not to join a group designed for voicing opinions. It's par for the course that a lot of people will voice similar opinions that don't agree with yours.
And by the way, I don't think Nick is the best hairstylist in the world but no hairstylist hits a home run every time, and he does have to work with what he gets, which is sometimes less than ideal. I think the stylist should discuss with the person what they want to do before they do it - perhaps do computer imaging or a sketch with some choices and have the MO approve it so that when we see the result we realize that the person might be getting just what they asked for.
It barely requires a 'search', or knowing a 'protocol'. It requires basic common sense--if you see that the whole first screen of this section has ten threads that say 'I hate Nick', 'Nick is the worst hairdresser', why not just jump on one of those, as any medium-literate person can see that it's going to be saying the same thing over again. There's nothing insightful about just saying the same blasted thing for the eight millionth time. It doesn't require anything beyond basic reading skills.
But, because we do love our repetition here, I'll say it again:
Are the cuts shown on tv Nick's best? Maybe not. But these women are not his usual clients, either--not when he can command hundreds of dollars per appointment. The MOs are the Fantastic Sam's, or DIY level of haircut. And he does improve the majority of them.
I'd want to see his actual salon work before I could comment as to whether he is, as one poster said, 'the worst hairdresser'. The folks who pay him the big bucks are the ones whose opinion matters most, I'd say.
There are only about 50 episodes a year. That's probably about half a percent of his work. Does anyone want their job evaluation to exclude 99.5% of the work they do?
So, unless you want to be judged on an insignificant amount of your actual performance, don't do it to somebody else.
That's my main beef with those who jump on and make their first post such an attack on someone who's just doing their job--they don't even have a 30 second look around before saying such unpleasant things, and they judge someone by a standard which, if applied to them, they would be the first to yell 'unfair!'.
We don't know that he isn't having extended conversations with the MOs about how they would like their hair, and what is realistic for them to maintain. He's on screen for a total of five minutes. People who actually have gone to him say that an appointment at his salon takes about 4 hours. So a lot more is happening than you see on screen.
Ten seconds of thinking about how they themselves would want to be treated, which many of them seem incapable of sustaining, would shut that down. Or maybe not being so critical without having a fuller knowledge of what really has gone on, might be sensible.
And that's not an 'internet forum protocol', it's a basic precept of human interaction.

cathb, I agree with you 1,000%. When I first joined this forum, I did quite a bit of looking around before I ever posted anything. I wondered too what the spray on foundation was called that Carmndy uses on MOs, but I used common sense and looked through all the forums to see if anyone else had asked that question before I posted yet another question about what the name of the foundation was. It was right there in black and white. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out; it's called using your head. Look around, that's all it takes.
The first time I read a post from someone who didn't like Nick's work, I thought, 'aw, you're kidding! I think he's fantastic!' That was their opinion, and mine was the opposite. Fine. Then as the negative posts multipled like rabbits, it wasn't hard to recognize a pattern. 'He's the worst hairdresser', 'he's awful', 'replace him, he s*cks!' are just some of the many comments people have made about him. And not just once or twice. NEARLY EVERY DAY this is posted here by somebody. And I find it really interesting that ntuitive1 doesn't refer to those comments as derogatory, only the ones that call a spade a spade. The ones who wail over and over about how they hate Nick's work are whiners, plain and simple, because it's constant; it never ends. Look up the meaning of the word whiner in the dictionary if you don't believe me. There have been some outfits that Stacy and Clinton chose or the MO chose that I didn't like, and I maybe commented ONCE, then let it alone; I didn't go on, ad infinitum about it the way the Nick haters do. And I certainly never suggested that Stacy or Clinton be replaced simply because I didn't like their fashion choice. I have sense enough to know that I'm not going to like every thing, every time.
Again.... I like Nick. He does a fine job with the limitations of what he's often given by the MO's. The MO's are often busy moms and/or career women who want "wash and wear" hair. Those limitations are going to restrict Nick from MANY styles. So... Nick has to rely on a few standard cuts that only need some products to help them along.

And how do we know the ones who get 'the same old boring bob' don't ask for that bob or something similar? They're the ones who are being made over, not the ones here who complain about Nick's work.

A bit of pots calling kettles black, here? You come on to make a derogatory comment about people with whom you disagree as well.

WHAT A HORRIBLE HAIR DRESSER!!! WHY NOT HAVE THE CANDIDATES GET A HAIR STYLE WHILE DOING THEIR SHOPPING....theyre in NY for god's sake! who wants another doggone BOB hairdoo? Nick CAN cut, but CANT style. so why have him? use a styling school if u just want a cut. whats the use of a "make-over" without a cutie new hair do....NICK IS HORRIBLE. get over it. and stop whinning when we post our opinion.
DO U NEED SOME CHEESE TO GO WITH THAT WHINE? IS THIS "NICK" IN DISQUISE? CRYING ON THE BOARD INSTEAD OF GOING OUT AND GETTING STYLING TALENT?

People will come in out of the blue and trash the newest food item without looking for existing threads on it. I don't get annoyed by it there or here, but I have always said that if a lot of people are bothered by it the site should post a "sticky" telling everyone to search first before posting.
It doesn't require a 'search'. It requires seeing what is plainly in big fat red letters for more than half the threads on the first page. Jumping on and posting what thirty or more people post every blasted week, is not breaking any unwritten protocol.
Nothing needs to be a 'sticky'. Just all these outstandingly brilliant, original people who say the same things need to use the brains they think they are uniquely gifted to have.
No amount of 'sticky' is going to replace basic common sense.
If you're not annoyed by stupidity, that's fine. Some of us have higher standards.
Let's see, I post on three finance boards, this one, another fashion board, a parenting board, a trying to conceive board and two Disney boards. I have been doing this for the last seven or eight years. Several of these boards have FAQs or other stickies at the top that new members are asked to read before posting. And repeats of the same tired topics get about the response as they do here. Oddly enough, I have never posted until I have read through older posts. I don't thing that people who can't be bothered to look at other posts on the first page that have the same subject line as they typed really care much about anything other than whining.
Whatever.
Anyway Nick is neither the best nor worst I have seen. Most of the MOs get a style that they can handle with their obvious lack of skill and that is an improvement at least. I think the bowl haircut with the blue dye was awful and last MO should have been introduced to a large barrel curling iron to open up her curls around her face. But otherwise, given what he has to work with, he does pretty well. There must be some reason he is making more money than I am.
Originally posted by jaffie78: [COLOR:RED]WELL, IF NICK WAS A GREAT STYLIST, THE FIRST POST WOULDNT BE NEGATIVE!!!!! DAAAAAAH
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Are you serious? Just because somebody doesn't like Nick's work doesn't mean he's bad. Duh! jaffie78, since you think you have all the answers, you're elected to find another hairdresser for the show, and get him or her hired. What's that? You can't? I didn't think so. You're just a bunch of talk with no action. And you can't spell. Does your mommy know you're using her computer?
As a rule, I think Nick does a very good job. First of all there four face shapes, heart, oblong, oval and square. Most of the MO's are not raving beauties to begin with. They are average looking at best. Clothes make a huge difference in how the MO's look. I think the hair and makeup only contribute to the overall look. Nick can't perform miracles!!! Anyone who wants to have Nick replaced needs to write a snail mail letter to TLC. The Message Boards are insufficient to get the attention of the powers that be.
What about the ones who enjoy watching Nick work? It's incredibly, unbelievablly selfish and self-centered for the ones who don't like what he does to demand that he be replaced. Just who the h*ll do they think they are? That their wants and opinons are all that matter? They're not the only ones who watch the show. There's a new invention called a remote. When Nick's segment comes on, they're perfectly free to turn the channel, or get up and get something to eat or drink for the measly 5 minute or so segment that millions of others enjoy watching. I didn't like the ambush of the potential MO, but I would never be so stuck on myself to act like what I don't like is the only thing that counts. These little children who have wasted space posting their hatred need to get over themselves, fast. How would they feel if someone e-mailed modivy and demanded she not allow anyone to post anti-Nick posts on her board? The complainers would be outraged. But they don't think that far ahead. Their attention span is so short, they think that what they want right this second is all that should matter, and they don't care what anyone else likes or wants to see. These self-absorbed, immature people are like nothing I have ever seen, and I'm a member of several message boards. It's really, truly pathetic.
Thank you Samanthapants. This diatribe against Nick has been going on for months on end. I would hope that there would be more productive subjects that could be discussed. I have read blog after blog bashing Nick. The naysayers need to take a flight to New York and visit the Discovery Channel to protest. Enough is enough! Lets try and talk about something else for a change.
For all of you "Let's get rid of Nicksters", please read Barkat's response to me under the subject of Do the MO's have to pay taxes on the map/trip? Barkat is Kathy from the 3/14/08 show. I think her genuine response will give the naysayers food for thougtht.

That's the real test of whether the hair stylist is good--did they please the client? Sounds like Kathy was happy.
I looked up Nick Arrojo Studios the other day. Nick can command $500 for just the cut. If he were that bad, nobody would pay for his work, nobody would come to study hair design with him, and so on.
So, as someone said, as long as he's making a lot more money than I am, I have to figure he's doing something right.
I wish they would remove the "quote" box from the top of the Reply box. This thread is mostly copies of something posted already.
I think those who don't like Nick's work are those who prefer the "witch" hairdo, which is flat, straightened hair with jagged ends. Why anyone thinks that looks good is beyond me.
I was glad to read yesterday on a fashion site that curls are coming back. Hooray! Out with the flat witches!
(I thought I would chime in with some meaningless nonsense.)

A: "We" don't--- because this isn't "Survivor" or "American Idol". Nick is employed by the show.
Thank you, garnetsue. When there has never been an element of 'vote' on this show, why is it a hard concept for people to realise that it's not a show involving voting about anything?
cathlib, besides they would have a heart attack when they realize that there are just as many of us that like Nick, think he does a good job with what he usually has to work with and realize that it's not about us but the MO. Translated, it means Nick would still be employed by the show.
The Nick whiners always remind me of the folks on the QVC boards that whine about the hosts. The QVC host bashers can't vote them off anymore than the Nick whiners because 1) you didn't hire them, therefore 2) you can't fire them.
My favorite is Disboards.com. I really enjoy reading through the posts. There are Disney related ones as well as a few off-topic ones such as a budget board.
Just to throw this in for all the "Boring Nick Bob" Haters:
I recently got my very long hair cut in a style similar to what Nick produces on the show. I was extremely pleased with the results, and find that it is so much easier to maintain and style. But, what I found extremely interesting was that the hairstyle passed the "ex" test. I ran into an ex-boyfriend from high school who loved my waist-length long hair. I hadn't seen him since I was 16 (6 years ago), and he did the requisite "you look good" statement. But, then he said, "You know, I love women in long hair, but you're really rocking the shorter look." He's not the only one to say that either. Both my dad and brother thought that I looked just as good with short hair as I did with long hair. So far all you ladies who won't cut your hair because of the men in your life, you never know how they'll feel. The might find you sexier and more beautiful with it short.
The Nick Bashing Society of bloggers have been hammering the "Let's Get of Nick" for months on end. He is still employed by HGTV/Production Company. Given what Nick has to work with on the show, he does his best. Let's face it not all the MO's are fixable. I don't think Nick tries to make the MO ugly. For Hea**vn's sake, lets try another subject for a change.

Some of his clients in his salon are Sports Illustrated models and Minnie Driver, all of whom have long hair, so your suggestions don't hold water. Instead of making yet another uninformed comment, read what a recent makeover said about him. Barkat is her screen name and she was the construction company owner who was on the show about 3 weeks ago.
WHAT? I am a hairdresser myself, and Nick is an artist. I think that you might need to go to hairdressing 101 and find out what it is all about before you have the right to make a statement like this. I also have to say that Nick is one of the best colorists I have seen. The color that he does is gorgeous. Also, no one will have every cut, style, or color turn out perfect and please everyone. Everyone's hair is different, and it doesn't always do just what you think it will. You work with it from there and turn ou a masterpiece.
Thank you, Roey! It's so good to have a professional hair stylist weigh in on the discussion. Someone who knows what they're talking about is much better than just a lot of whining and carping.
You can't say someone doesn't know their craft with any authority, when it's really just 'I don't liiiiike it'.
Good to have someone who's gone through some training say something.
I don't know why everyone doesn't like Nick. He did a beautiful hairdo for Addie. She was the rocker's girlfriend with her own baby. Her short cut was good. I like calling long straight hair the witch. Thatis very funny.
