Ok, well first off I made sure this was legal where I live before I did this. Ok well behind my house there is miles and miles of woods, with a swamp and a small river running through it. So I asked my dad if I could and he said why not, this was duing the summer and my mom was not home xD. But I got my swiss champ knife one of those .22 Survival kits, which are alot cheaper to make then to buy. And I went about 10-12 miles back and I stayed there for a week. Sure, I had my house right down the way but I didnt go back to it at all. I stayed near where the river ran into the swamp because it would be where I would stop if in a survival situation. Well the .22 Survival kit had some fishing line and 3 size4 hooks in it, and about 15 extra rounds, and a flint. I caught a 3-4 pound catfish the first night which I baked over a small fire. I live down south, and in the summer it doesnt get to cold here so I didnt worry about that. I built my shelter where a tree had fallen over and left a big hole, I just put sticks over it to make it look like this / \ and then I put palm branches over it and called it home. With the .22 I got 2 squirels the 3rd day which I over "slighty" overcooked on accident, but they tasted decent either way. There were alot of deer there, but I could live off of a deer for several weeks, so I didnt try to kill one. On the 4th day I didnt catch or kill anything, but the 5th day I got a largemouth bass that was about 2-3 pounds, that I knew how to cook from experience best meal I had that entire week. I got some lily pad tubers, which tasted just like Les said they did, bitter, and other than that there was no other flavor. It rained a little that night but my shelter didnt leak at all, but it kept me awake none the less. The 6th day I caught a mess of brim or bream whichever way you spell it. Those lasted me for my last 2 days. Then I buried my ashes and spread my shelter around. Because I too folow the leave no trace policy. And then my week was over. Next time Im going to have a video camera just one, not 4 like Les. And hope I bring enough cd's and batteries for it. It was really fun, and helped me understand what it was relly like out alone for a week. Perhaps next time I will go ut further, but I dont know. Bye! And for water, I just boiled it in a metal cup that amazingly floated. That I found in the river.

Neat. I would love to do that, but -looks in backyard- All I have to survive in is a half finished building behind my fence in the Suburbian Jungle. But do go with a video camera next time. That would rock.

Thanks, and I hated when I lived with houses right behind my house, so annoying. But then I moved where I am now Big Grin and next time I will be taking a video camera, but now that school started it will be awhile.

Sounds like you had a great week. Have you thought about maybe bringing a notebook and pencil to write a blog next time? I enjoyed reading your post! Smile

I went to Smokey Mountains Nat'l park last year and asked a ranger about doing that there. He said there would be no problem, but I would have to check in with them to find out where bears are overactive that season, and to get a general idea of what else to look out for. He even gave me a cautious "yes" when I asked about hunting and fishing for food... apparently it's not illegal, just not welcomed. If you live close enough to Cherokee in western NC, try to get on the blueridge parkway about halfway between rte 19 and rte 441 there should be seasonal roads leading NE into the Park. You can find some of the most isolated and untouched spots in NC. Cheap and comfortable camping sites, from which you take trails miles deeper into the woods until you decide to go cross country, and finally isolate yourself. I'm planning a similar trip in 2009. I'll start by marking a couple of way points with my GPS, then turning it and my radio off until I either get back, or get in trouble.

Cool. Me and my friend want to that. THe worst that happen to me was about 2 miles out in the woods I found a cougar track that was super fresh. Headed in the same direction as me. I kept an eye out all the way home.

I wish I could do that it sounds so cool! I live in the south too and know exactly what your talking about. But did you get bit my misquitoes? I always do. That's the only reason that I might would regret about doing that.

I would love to do that but the hills close to my house are private property and some evil company is making homes everywhere! They're even tearing down a water park to build homes. Mad

Any way, there are no tresspassing signs everywhere.

There is a place I could do that in my hometown, I've been thinking of doing it for quite some time. Definitely bringing camera gear to document it.

Keep on rockin' man, sounds like you had fun!
