It was my third year deer hunting in nebraska's great sandhills. I was 18 and the first hunt on my own. In late november the weather is warm during the day about 50 to 60 degrees F. But at night it drops to below freezing and the entire low lands are covered in frost or snow. The sandhills all look the same any direction you go. My GPS ran out of batteries and i was about 12-15 miles from any road, camp, or vehicle. There are lots of lakes and they strech for miles and are surrounded by marsh. I shot two grouse with my hunting rifle but then had on 1 cartridge left. I made a small fire in a blowout under a lone pine tree. With no shelter and only a small fire I didn't sleep at all. The entire night was long and very cold. I hiked up to the nearest large hill and could spot a row of power lines about 6 miles away. Using my spotting scope. I ended up hiking for another 3 miles until I ran into another deer hunter. And he drove me back to my camp. I eventually got a deer and had a good time. With a little bit of a scare though.
I think that survivor man should try going to the Sandhills of Nebraska in late november after deer season. There are stories of hunters (like me) getting lost and dying. I would like to see that show. Just a Thought

Same story here but I was 17 and in Va. Walked over 38 miles. The police was even out looking for me. What I learned was, at least in Va., lost hunting is easy to survive. But the trick is to survive comfortably. Now they make fun of my day pack, I could live comfortably for a month with it and my shot gun (we can not use rifles in So. Va., to flat). I now go with a military style gun belt and butt pack, Canteen and Canteen cup which I think I could live comfortably for a week or 2. The long and the short of it is I can not understand how any "good" hunter should die while lost. It is just a matter of preparation. How was the deer season this year?
