I am set to graduate college soon. And I'm a little concerned about paying for child care. I've crunched the numbers; and basically I will be working to pay for someone else to raise my child. Is there any aid or suggestions?
Unfortunately, I don't have any suggestions. I've been researching less expensive alternatives, but have had no luck so far. I read that the average family spends 25% of their income on "sub-par care".
This article did give some insight into policy changes for those of us activists. This includes getting the States involved and getting better wages for teachers. I guess I can only hope to initiate child care reform before I consider having child number 2.
It all depends on where you live. I live in GA. My children are in middle school and high school. I found someone at home to care for my kids when they were younger. I tried the family thing...which was unreliable and the daycare thing...horrid people - they cared more about the state than the child. So I found a wonderful stay at home mother that had a daughter the same age as mine. She cared for a couple other children and was great with them. Best decision I ever made. I wish it began that way. They also started a pre-K programs that was free and offered to state residents for children 4 year old. Many of the daycares offer this. Also, in summer, many teens look for work and can be very helpful (make sure they are certified by American Red Cross and have experience and references.)
