a while back frank did a bedroom in which the wall behind the bed looked like a giant face (wire eyes and a big red fabric lips) on a side wall he did a technique with mixing 2 colors applying the base coat, covering it with another color while wet and using a big car washing sponge to blend them. can anybody give me the specifics on how to go about this?

The technique is called color washing. If you go to HD or Sherwin Williams, they can give you complete how-tos...and many will even offer frequent workshops on it. It's very easy, but you need to pick the right color combos to get a pleasing finish. Also stay away from doing it with semi-gloss paints. The look gets garish after a while with too much shine.
