I saw a kitchen redo last night 10-3-04 done by Edward, where he had them paint the kitchen counter top, when it was done it looked like slate. Does anyone remember what kind of paint he used. I know he had (2) colors of gray. When the technique was done, the countertop looked great. I just re-did my kitchen in and "Old World" look and this look on my countertops would be great.

I would love to try and tackle mine! In addition to anyone with information on products used - What about products to remove/fix anything that doesn't turn out right? Also, how long is the finish expected to last?

I painted my countertops 2 years ago. I used Kilz primer first. I then painted a mottled effect with craft paint. I put on 4 (maybe 3) coats of polyurethane. I have a cat that won't stay off my countertops and I think I may have one nick out of the finish. You have to really look to see the scratch. This will work for vinyl flooring, also. I paint my kitchen floor like terra cotta tile. The satelite guys came to put in our satelite wires and one of them started back to the truck to get a masonry bit for his drill. He thought it was real tile!

This is a good thread. I wish I had seen this show as I am trying to think of a way to update our dreadful laminate countetops. Has anyone else had any successes? I once saw a product you rolled or poured on and it hardened to a thick solid finsih with pretty flecks of sparkle in it. I can't find this product as I don't know the name. If anyone has any cheap countertop ideas I would love to hear from you please and thanks.

Here's a thread where people answer the same question....including someone who has painted over 50 laminate counter tops.

There are also instructions here...but they do mention painting counters should be temporary as it doesn't make a good food safe surface.
