I'd put my money on them being North Face. I'd imagine most of his gear is North Face. I think he's a spokesman.

in the Costa Rica episode i thought hte knife looked a lot like the Buck Fieldmate, model 639. This model is no longer in production, but can be found, esp on ebay. I loved mine, before it was stolen. It took an incredible edge and really held up to some hard use.
Anyone else with an opinion? Bear???

I was surprised to see him use a hollow ground blade over a flat ground blade. Any torque while batoning a branch, and he could have taken a huge chunk out of the blade.
I'd trust my life with nothing less than a Busse Combat Knife, or one of their subsidiaries (Swamp Rat Knife Works and Scrap Yard Knives), for hard use survival knives.

Busse: www.bussecombat.com is the parent company www.bussecompanystore.com is where you can order overstocks and limited releases Busse Collector's page: www.badmojo.tv
Swamp Rat: Swamp Rat Collector's Page: www.swampshack.com (includes some reviews) www.ratknives.com is their store (they have their own message board, including a Survival forum at www.swampratknives.com)
Scrap Yard Knives: www.scrapyardknives.com (order page and forum (including another survival forum))
***********************
All knife models that are available are only available directly from the manufacturer, they are a semi-production company (they aren't true custom makers because they have specific models, but they aren't production in the sense that they make overstock that sits on dealer shelves). The vast majority of their business is dedicated to military orders. You can either buy directly from the manufacturer, or from the secondary market. Busse knives (and Swamp Rat, and Scrap Yard) are probably the only knives that gain value even if used.
Both Busse and Swamp Rat are well regarded at Bladeforums.com as being the toughest blades out there (and both companies have their own forums in the Manufacturer's subforum area). Busse uses a proprietary steel not found in any other knife, INFI. Swamp Rat uses a form of 52100 spring steel that has been differentially tempered (they call their heat/cryo treat of the steel SR101). Scrap Yard is another branch of Busse/Swamp Rat that just started up a few months back, they use S7 steel (they do their own temper, etc, call it SR77) and are the most affordable of all the models. In order of quality/toughness it's Busse>Swamp Rat>Scrap Yard; but all three are undeniably tough.
I personally own a Swamp Rat Battle Rat, Howling Rat, and Safari Skinner; and a Busse Satin Jack Tac and a Steel Heart Ergo, with a Combat Grade Fusion Battle Mistress and a Game Warden on order. All of which I use (and intend to use), no "safe queens".
Do a search for "Cliff Stamp", a Canadian impact physicist who likes to test knives to the point of failure, and see his reviews on the toughness of Busse and Swamp Rat knives; if you'd like more info!

I've never heard a clear answer on what model his knife is... For the record, it has a smooth edge all along the lead edge of the blade. On the top, it has a small skinning hook and a serated edge.. It did take a beating and I too want to know what kind it is.

I agree. A knife with a full tang running through the handle is important.
I recommend getting a mora knife. They are made in sweeden. You can get a really good knife for under $20
