I recently read an article about people critizing your show because of you and your crew not "roughing it" like the show makes it seem for example having extra water and food on hand and not sleeping out in the enviroment. I have watched every show that has been on and even two or three times for some of them just to see if I could learn anything eles from you. I think your one of the most intelligent, good hearted, self disciplined, honorable guys out there. It just disgusts me that there are people out there not getting the real message of your show that is to teach them how to survive if thier every lost in the wild. I could care less of what goes on behind the scenes of the show. What your teaching viewers on the show is priceless in my eyes. If I was ever lost in the wild I gotta tell ya I sure feel alot better with my chances of survival with some of the knowledge the show has givin me. I thank you for what you do and will always support your show. From one of your loyal viewers Eric D.

This is the coolest show I have personally ever seen. I saw one show of yours and was hooked.I may never be in any of these situations but it sure is cool to see you go through them Smile

PS: Get rid of "survivorman" its totally uncool compared to your show.I mean who in their right mind would rub leaves on their arms to see if it was poisonous. You are so much more experienced and fun to watch. Big Grin

Thank you, Bear, and all of the people who give us Man vs. Wild! Since we don't turn on the tv when we want a "class" on survival, you all make it fun and entertaining to learn about the remote places that you travel to. So! We can learn AND enjoy it! What fun would a cooking show be if you had to watch them grate cheese? You are my real life action hero, Bear. Who else can eat a grub, spider, eyeball with such grace? No one! Man vs. Wild is the only thing on tv worth watching.

Hello Bear,

Just wanted to let you know how much i appreciate what you do. It is unlikely that I will personally end up in one of these situations. However, if by some horrible twist of fate I do, I will feel a lot more prepared and definitely more safe knowing what I do because of you and your show. You are an excellent teacher. I'm very pleased to hear you made it safely home, and i wish you the best of luck in all that you do Bear Grylls.

Sincerely,

Travis

P.S. If you ever find yourself lost in the wild cities of southern California, I would love to meet you. Thanks again.

And that right there is once again the problem with this show: by teaching inaccurate survival methods and frequently encouraging the exact *opposite* behavior of what should be done, the show is putting hundreds of thousands of viewers in a situation where they're likely to get themselves killed if they ever end up in a survival situation.

For anyone who thinks the advice is good:

The advice was given to check for allergic/possible poisonous reaction to plants for using as toliet paper. I would rather have an inflamed arm, would'nt you? In my right mind I would rather be safe than sorry. Unless you find it fun to watch someone in agony over eating raw meat and just grabbing anything to use for that purpose.

I really love your show! On a program you did in Utah, USA you remarked on how you would not eat a snake because it was an endangered species but then on your latest program in the Sahara you ate a endangered frog?

Bear,
My husband, two boys (11, 9) and myself are in absolute awe of your raw power and enthusiasm as you demonstrate your survival techniques on your show.
But, after reading your bio, I was wondering, what drives you? Why do you feel the need to continue to break records and put yourself in such dangerous situations? I'm not criticizing at all, rather, just curious where that drive might have come from? And don't you miss your family? Doesn't your wife miss you and worry for you? I know she hated that parasailing mission...don't take my comments the wrong way, I LOVE your show and watching you do what you do, but want to understand, the "why" behind what you do....Most Sincerely, SusanDH, Sound Beach, NY p.s. I admire how you face your fears.

Hi Bear, I absolutely love the show. Don't feel bad about all the haters out there. I don't see those people doing half the things you do. There own lives are probably as dull as their comments, so they pretty much can't stand for anyone else to have some excitement. I did have one question though, I have read that drinking urine tends to cause further dehydration due to the salts in it. The US Army Field Manual, the head of the Texas Urological Society, and numerous survival instructors and guides advise against drinking it. Are you then maybe trying to say drink urine only if you're pretty much at the point of death and there's nothing left to sustain you?

Dear Mr. Grylls,

My mum and I were wondering what you would think if one of your boys, when they grew up, wanted to do what you do. I know that your line of work can be dangerous and was wondering how supportive you would of their choice.

Thank You for you time,

Bear,

On the Arizona canyons, did you perhaps eat a hallucinogenic before you magnetized the wire and placed on the leave in the water?

When the leaf/wire pointed to north.... you pointed to the north and said "that's north" then you pointed to your left, which would be West and said, "that's where the sun rose even though I didn't see it" and then you pointed to your right saying "that's west" while still facing north.

Come on now....

Bear...You do not need to thank us, we need to thank you. Your show is one of few shows on the tube these days that I actually want to watch, I am fascinated by all of the Man vs. Wild episodes. Just to let you know, you blow survivorman out of the water. You are entertaining, while he is depressing.

GO TEAM and good luck Bear

Dear Bear Grylls,
This probably isn't the first time you've heard this from me but dude you have the best show in the world. There isn't number to describe how many people watch you. I'm very sorry for what happened to your crew members that must have been hard. I wish the best for you and all of your crew members on your next journey to survive. Oh and i wish the best to you and your family as well. If you guys celebrate christmas i wish you a very Merry Christmas. Have you ever had a chance to where all of your fans could come and take pictures with you and you sign a picture for them?? Like a CD signing except without the CD's. Bear G. my username says it all for me basicly you do rock. I want to join the british special forces when I am older just like you. Do you think that is a bad idea because I saw videos of you on Youtube and they put you through nothing but hell. I'm sorry for that too, I saw a video where you were buried alive, well except for your head. Was that in the British Special Forces? I presume I might as well end this. So like I said best wishes to your family, your camera crew, and most of all yourself.

Sincerly,

I'm not sure whether or not Bear Grylls will actually read this, and if not, I understand. This is probably all stuff he already knows...

I wanted to say something about the controversy. It is my understanding that there have been occasions where the cast (Bear) and crew have not actually been forced to survive in the wilderness. I want to say that this, in no way, makes this show any less than it has ever been.

3 points:

1. Bear has not lied to his fans about this. Don't accuse him like he's Bill Clinton or something. The brits said it best: "The programme explicitly does not claim that the presenter's experience is one of unaided solo survival."**

2. Bear doesn't need to prove himself. His list of life experiences makes the tasks performed on this show look like child's play.

3. The critics have no idea. I am involved in television production in my college studies. To try and obtain footage like that which is presented in Man vs. Wild, while continuing to maintain expensive equipment and personal health is a great challenge. The things that are done in order to produce this show are, I'm sure, far more physically and mentally taxing than staying in the woods for a night or catching a fish.

The cast and crew of this show, in my opinion, are far beyond trying to impress anyone. They don't need to. What they do is impressive enough.

Good work everyone, don't let the critics get you down. A lot of people look up to you.

-Whitley

Hey Bear,

I'm a big fan of your show and wanted to express my thoughts after watching Mission Mt. Everest episode.

WOW!!! You are definitely in a league of your own now. I mean I thought you were on a suicide mission up there.

My heart was in my throat as you both took off up that mountain. I still can't quite thinking about what you pulled off!! The braveness and determination that you showed as you looked death in the face.

I am so happy that you both returned safely and I am sure fame and fortune will follow you for the rest of your live's.

Please be careful with your future endeavors as I was truly watching with thoughts of Steve Erwin in the back of my mind. For you wife and childrens sake ease off from the mindblowing stuff for a bit (even though it is good for the shows ratings .

Anybody else out there think this man is not headed for legendary status in the world of adventurers is hugely mistaken. I will look forward to the day that someone decides that this man's life is ready and ripe for a full motion picture.

In the meantime we all will just watch and enjoy. Thanks

The TRUTH is, Bear, many people are still deeply offended by the controversy.

The original episodes, when compared to the new transparencies, reveal a startling amount of deception. It seems you didn't catch any fish (or any other prey) and much of the show was staged.

And in the new episodes, I've yet to see anything that reveals much survival training.
---
These words are calculated but careless and overstated. I've never written before, and rarely write to anything like this, but I felt compelled to respond. No matter how much I encounter the multitude of things that can provoke us, it is still strange to me when someone feels the right to be "deeply offended" because their perception of something/someone is different than reality. Even if the production was intentionally and maliciously deceptive (and I really don't think they were)...just don't watch. Man, live your life with your own two feet instead of needing to find offense elsewhere when someone doesn't measure up to your expectations. Are you a survival expert? Can you really discern that Mr. Gryll's given nothing that reveals much survival training. I'm not special forces, but have had some survival training. So I know your comment is bogus. If you are informed in this area, shame on you for overstating your criticism because you are offended. And may I lovingly say this: you're getting angry at someone who has an interesting job full of challenges that we find entertaining. If you can't appreciate it unless he puts his life at risk without wisely taking measures to make sure he makes it out of a tuff situation and makes it home to his family, then watch something else. Or better yet, educate yourself in survival (and to the guy who feels ANYONE should even think about trying real survival after merely watching a television program, PLEASE DON'T. If someone is that foolish, they need not blame Mr. Grylls for whatever happens. You NEVER put yourself in these situations intentionally without profound education in the skills to overcome. And television isn't going to get you there. But what he does show and teach really could be helpful...back to my thought) buy a flint and striker, get a decent bag and tent, go outside and appreciate God's AMAZING creation. Take plenty of water and make sure someone knows where you are. If you get in a fix, I hope you've paid attention to MvW. But, if you want to blow it all off as not really being "anything that reveals much survival training"...well...okay.
Mr Grylls, I've a 9yr old little girl and a 6yr old little boy. I'd much rather them pay attention to a man who has your character and determination (just overcoming the back injury and getting back in the saddle is good form...not to mention a few record breaking extraordinary things) than to hot-headed criticism that has a lot of heat but very little light. I too am a man who needs his Christian faith. The most amazing gift I have/will ever receive and my wife and kids are so thankful God found me. And you know, I think our faith tells us that even if we never meet in this part of life (and I can't imagine why we would), there is a day when we'll be able to enjoy this amazing creation made new...rescued from all of our selfishness. Makes me want to take better care of it today. Our family enjoys and appreciates your show. Thanks. BTW...I read your book list and wondered if you've ever read anything by Brennan Manning. His book Abba's Child was a life changer for me. God bless you and your family.
grace & peace...al

Thank you Bear Smile for helping me to get back into the "outdoors mode." I spent 11 years working with Aircrew while I was in the U.S. Air Force teaching survival continuation training. In 2002, my son was born and I just knew that I was going to teach him everything I know about surviving the elements outdoors. However, at age 3 he was diagnosed with autism and I have had to put this idea on hold. My son Maverick is now 5yrs old and recovering from his autism. Thus, I am planning to take him camping and hiking this summer into the mountains of Colorado. Thank you for inspiring me and for all the wonderful tips. I have your books and I am using them to help teach my son survival skills.

Thank You!

Can you tell us some about your gear/clothing (it all seems to be indestructable). I'm especially interested in your knife, which seems to work with every survival need.
