I have a 10 gallon tank with 1 Molly, 2 Guppies, & 3 Neon Tentras. Tetras and Guppies are doing great, but the Molly is constantly swimming with this nose against the glass, going up and down, up and down, up and down ... all day long. The only time it stops is when I feed. It eats, and goes right back to it. None of the other fish are doing it. What is the Molly's problem???? By the way, I tested my Ph and Ammonia and they are both good. I do my 1/3 water changes every two weeks just like I'm supposed to. The temp is 77-79 deg F. I have an air pump hooked up to a ornamental ship that agitates the water wonderfully.

your molly most likely just wants to eat.
but, dont give it extra food.

as long as he/she isnt getting any abrasions from the glass, then you have nothing to worry about.

try adding a little aquarium salt to your water, and changing up the set up (move the plants/decor around a bit). maybe it will keep him/her interested.

if you want, you can get another molly to keep your molly busy. but be sure to get the same sex as the one you have now, or else you will have hundreds in just s few months.

Well, I did just change the set up today. As soon as I got my hands out of the water the molly went back to its favorite practice of spazing out against the glass. I did notice the molly is VERY aggressive at feeding time, esspecially if there is those little frozen shrimp involved. I don't really want to get another molly because my tank is about at its limit already. I hate to admit it, but I was hoping I was doing something wrong so I could fix it and the fish would settle down.

from what you have explained so far, it seems as though you are doing everything correctly. although you do have room for one-2 inch fish or 2- one inch fish. i mean that would be the stocking limit, you do not need to reach that point, but if you chose to, you can. thats very good, too many people on this forum insist on overstocking their tanks, im glad to finally see someone who is happy with a roomy tank.

how many times a day do you feed. you could even feed 3 times a day if you are around to do so. but, if it is a male all it could be is him getting fustrated over trying to find a female. most likely there isnt anything you can do.

your molly and other fish will eat them, seperate them immediatly if you want them to survive, other wise.... just let them hang out, maybe one or 2 will make it.

Mollies are weird/annoying fish. That's what I got when I first got an aquarium. I just don't like their personalities, basically. I was devastated when they had babies for the first time and then ATE THEM. Eek

If you're unhappy with your fish (or they are too big/agressive for you), some local fish stores may let you exchange/trade out your fish. You might give that a try.

Why do you say that?

i say it because of yankgirl's statement. By what she said, it seems like she gets pets before researching them, and then throws them away when she doesnt like what they do naturally.

for instance: if she researched about mollies breeding habits, she would know that mollies breed quite easily and eat their young if given the chance, just like many other species of fish.
she should also research fish and realize what kind of fish she is getting... like... she shouldnt get a small fish that is going to grow up to be large and aggressive if she doesnt want a large and aggressive fish.
it is just irrisponsible pet ownership, and it should be greatly frowned upon.

she shouldnt blame the fish for their natural behavior.

the disposable pets comment comes from the fact that she is too irrisponsible to reasearch her pets before getting them, then just throws them away when she finds out their natural tendencies. people like this just really annoy me, and it irks me to have people like this giving "advice" to good pet owners like you, semper1982.
its a shame.

Oh! I get you. I thought you were talking to me when you said that. I understand. Just in case you cared. I didn't seperate the babies, mainly because I have no were to go with them. Nobody is eating them and they have almost doubled in size! I suppose my only option is to try and give them away when they get big enough to catch.

oh good! you;re lucky, they usually eat their young. but if you cant find them homes try asking the pet store to take them for you, they usually will.

I tried to get Petsmart to take them back since they sold me the preggo fish, but they said they don't take baby fish from common folk because we might contaminate their enviroment.

My goodness, we're taking giant leaps with our assumptions aren't we? For the record, I have never "disposed" of a fish, let alone any other pet. I did, however, trade in an aggressive cichlid because it was killing all of the others in my tank. I got another fish that was exactly the same breed, after consulting with the staff (who is highly reputed in my town). The store took it back happily and he rejoined others like him.

As for mollies, I got my first fish tank when I was 18 years old and in my freshman year of college. I had never had a fish tank. I listened to the people at the pet store and went from there, but actually decided not to do my dissertation on the breeding habits of mollies.

What do you suggest that semper does now that her fish population is rapidly multiplying? Now is she going to be condemned for not doing proper research? She should have knooooown that they'd have babies, right? Whatever.

I don't like mollies. Period. I don't like tiger barbs either, but that's my choice. Sometimes fish act out of "character", too? Have you ever heard of a single guppy terrorizing gouramis or danios to the point of death? Maybe YOU (sullen) have experienced this, but out of the four "fish people" I talked to, every one of them was surprised.

With regard to my koi, I spent $5 on him initially and now have sunk a hefty chunk of change to situate him in a healthy, happy environment in my office. If that had not been an option, other options may have included finding someone with a koi pond who might like him or giving him to a friend who had koi.

Since you seem to be lumping all of your assumptions on me, then I'll go ahead and let you know that I've done years (7 or so) of off and on research on dogs. I have continually decided not to get one because of the committment. I am researching them again now, but I'm guessing that maybe that's a bad idea, too?

In my humble opinion, it's generally not a good idea to condemn someone, but it's especially bad when you don't know squat about them. Why not try asking some questions and THEN condemn them?

Try finding some friends who will take them or get a large tank to put the babies in. Don't over populate the tank! And actually I don't know what they say about assumers...Big Grin

if you get a larger tank for all the babies they will just keep reproducing over and over. try to find a private owned petstore, or sell them at a yard sale or something.
