At first I was really excited about a show like this for TV on a main stream channel. Now, I'm wishing the show won't be picked up for a second season. Some of the writers here on the forum are quite passionate about Mr. Moore and that would be reasonable if he was accurately educating the public, while still entertaining them. I'm a university educated archaeologist who specializes in the analysis of human skeletons, particularly those who have died in hand to hand combat and diseases. I have a lot of field experience, and I have never worked with anyone who conducts themselves as Mr. Moore does. The most recent episode was a fairy tale painted up as the truth. It is far more likely the individual died from a disease like dysentery or influenza then throwing himself into a battle to defend against a made up attack. Those sorts of actions leave marks on the bones, fatal or not. Mr. Moore also never ascertained if the individual was in the said battle. He could have died 5 years earlier, or 10 years later. The individual had vertebral injuries that are seen in people who do hard labour, such as farming or lifting heavy objects. For all we know, this individual could have been the village idiot and hauled rocks from the planting fields. They have no dates, they have no evidence of death, yet somehow a wild story of self sacrifice has been produced. I would love for my profession and other branching of archaeology to be represented by some one who will show the truth, which is always more exciting then fiction.
Also, in archaeology we try not to make up ridiculous names for the people we study, this is disrespectful. They had real names during their life time.
I agree. I was very excited when I heard about this show also. I may not be so much of a "professional" given that I only have a bachelor's of science in evolutionary anthro and have taken a few grad courses. But this guy gets on my last nerve. I feel like he belittles the work of the anthropologists and archaeologists who have dedicated years to their research... as if they needed his brilliant mind to come in and solve all their problems? I think not. This show needs a new host and a new way of going about the osteological investigation.
The best indicator of how other professionals feel is to watch the placating smiles of the people around Mr. Moore as he makes his wild and usually unsubstantiated (sometimes contradicted) summations. Even for a complete amateur like me his tendancy to leap to conclusions is painful to watch.
