In fact, I´m not quite sure if the Defiant was ever used as a night fighter, but, could it have been turned into an effective one (I mean, to rank among WWII´s best)? The turret allowed for the ventral attack the nachtjagdflieger liked so much, and the rather bad performance the plane had didn´t matter that much in dark skies.
