It would appear that the XM8 is the front runner of the field, but there appears to be some reluctance to change rifle systems with the movement to the 6.8 mm round. The XM8 is currently chambered for the 5.56 round, but with the complaints of effective range on the 5.56, the military may be rethinking the rifle swap. Perhaps an XM8 in 6.8 mm?
The replacement is the XM8 and it will go into service in 2008, it will have the 6.8mm rounds, it will have 5 configurations, a assault rifle version, sniper rifle version, squad support version, close combat version, and assault, rifle w/grenade launcher version.
I do not believe that the US wil switch to 6,8 mm rounds for severel reasons. First 5,56 is nato standart. There is a huge logistical advantage in having simular ammo. Second, the XM8 is a derivative of the H&K G36 which was "born" with 5,56mm. We saw the implications of changing ammo size with the M16 in the start of the vietnam war. I do not believe that they will make the same mistake again.
there are a few replacements for the m16 they ar just decidning which to choose there is the xm8 the scar l carbine the scar h the h and k and the m468 with 6.8mm bullets
I think if they want to make the M-16 a little better all they need to do is convert it to .308/7.62 nato. That would give it the range they want. And only cost of the upper receiver's
