Is there a big difference in the engine sounds of most modern armor? and I mainly mean between the M60, Merkava, Leopard, Leclerc and Challanger tanks engines?
I mean do they sound different? or do they all sound like old WWII tanks?

I know that there is a big difference in the sound of the Leopard 1 and 2. They old leopard 1 makes a lot more noise than the newer 2. I mean extremely loud!!! I can emagine that the other new tanks make a noise like the leopard 2, which is still loud. But I do not believe any of them sound like ww2 tanks. The new ones simply have that much more hoursepower.

I served on M60A1's and there can be differences in the sounds of tanks. Just as I was leaving the Army the Abrams was coming into service with 3rd Mech (I was with B/3/7 Cav). We called them "Hoovers" because they sounded like vacuum cleaners to us (they called us "Dinosaurs" by the way). A lot of factors go into the sounds that a tank makes: engine, tracks, roadwheels, etc. Not all WWII tanks sounded alike and modern tanks also have different sounds but all basically growl, clatter and vibrate like hell.

Point of comparison, a German tank could be typically heard from a distance of 100-200 meters. A T-34 could be heard at 500-600 meters.
