i was watching a show on the histroy channel about the last stand of the three hundred spartans at thermopaly. the way they discribed themosticles makes him sound like he was one of the best strategists and tacticians of the ancient world. If they are right i would have to agree with that assesment. do you think he is that good and who do you think is better?

he was a great leader, and yes a great tactition, but there were a lot better tactitions than him. Ex: Julius Caesar, Hannibal Barca, etc. Themosticles was great, but others were better.

i think there are alot of tactians in the ancient world who were just as good but didn't get the kind of credit ceaser and hannibal got. cyrus the great was able to use the types of soldiers he had and fit his battle plan around them. he was a great tactian.

Themosticles understood both the strategic and tactical values of naval power. His tactics against the Persians were effective. If it was not for his fleet, then the battle of Thermopylae would have been over Day One. Ironically, when folks talk about the battle, the naval actions get little, if any, notice. Then again, to judge from all the hype, the Spartans were the only ones holding the pass while the other contingents sat around doing nothing.

it does annoy me that none of the other greeks get any credit. there is a movie from the 1960's called the 300 spartans. it actually does talk aobut and show the naval battle and the other greeks fighting at the battle. it also shows the persians point of view. i think that it is a very good movie. you should check it out.
