i really need some with this one. my puppy just does not want to come to you when we call her. we have tried everything. she picks up on all other commands really quick just not this one. could someone please help.
Put her on a 15-30 ft leash and have someone hold her back. Walk to the end of the leash and with treats in your hand, call her. The person holding her should let go of her. If she comes to you- give her the treat and lots of praise. Make it a REALLY big deal. If she doesn't, reel her in or start running in the opposite direction (she'll naturally chase you). When she gets to you still give her the treat and lots of praise.
Remember never to scold her or do something unpleasant to her when she comes to you. If you do, she'll think of coming when called a bad thing. Keep it a really good thing- use really good treats when training it. Also, do not give a command you cannot enforce. By doing this your dog will learn to ignore you. If the command is not finished being trained, don't try calling her to you from the backyard while she's chasing a squirrel.
we have tried just about everything but that. we will certainly give it a try cause a few times she escaped from the yard and boy did we have a time getting her back
Another thing to remember is not to chase her. By chasing her, you teach her to run from you- because she thinks it's a game. One way to get her back to you is to run in the opposite direction.
There's a great DVD on training a recall called Really Reliable Recall. I've heard many great things about it and it may be just what you're looking for.
My dog is listening me when we are in yard, but when we go to street or in park,i call him:Ajax com..!And he look at my eyes and just go.He runs, and runs until I catch him.I'm really trying to training my pup to come when I call him,so please help me.... P.S. sorry on mistake I made(if there is mistake)because I am from Serbia, and I don't know to write good.
6 months old is very young. You will need to put a "flat" type collar on your puppy. Next use a 6 foot long leash. You will need to walk with your pup when you let the pup out to do business. You need to praise the pup when the pup is at your side. If the pup roams away from you but still on leash you say nothing at this age. You need to talk to the puppy in an "up" voice a playful voice to keep it's attention. Heck, play with the pup when it comes to you. Make it interesting for the pup to be with you and boring when you are not near. If you use a toy to get the pups attention make sure to play with pup when it comes to you-that would be a reward to the pup. Do not yank on the leash yet, not at 6 months old. Don't yell at it, it's a pup!
My 1 year old doesn't come either. I've started to only use the come command at the end of a sit stay or down stay when he comes to me for his treat, usually in the house lately. I'm worried that by using it when he doesn't come I've trained him to ignore the command and want to start retraining him to it in a positive way. Does this make sense? Its a slow approach but its such an important command.
GinnyK, When your dog is in a sit stay, (with leash on and at your left) you will next practice the "recall" command (the proper name for the come command). Anyway, place dog in sit stay. You will take 1 step (with right foot)forward. You will then turn around to face the dog (dog still in sit). You are directly in front of dog. You can stay there about 30 seconds. You will then (at the same time) give the "come" command tugging leash toward you (immediately). If you have medium or large size dog, lead the dog (with leash) around the back of you (use 2 hands with leash behind back), dog should walk into a sit stay at your left. Praise dog! Don't go nutty-happy yet. With dog in sit stay, repeat the "recall exercise". After 2 or 3 times your praise of the dog should be bigger and maybe end training exercise with playtime. After playtime maybe a treat? Your leash should be a 6ft long leash. Eventually,You will increase the "wait time" to give the command and when you step in front of your dog increase your distance from the dog (still on leash). When you are at end of leash and the recall is going well, then buy a 25 foot leash and naturally, gradually increase your distance of standing in front of the dog. As the distance between you and the dog increase, it may be neccessary to tug the leash to let the dog know where you want it to come when called. You Goal: To be at the end of the 25 foot leash, facing your dog as it is in a sit stay, for 3 minutes. Then when you call the dog, the dog gleefully runs straight to you, walks behind your back goes into heel position ready for a walk! Or maybe for playtime? As with all training exercises, you need patience, It takes a bit of time for the dog to figure out what you want. If you lose patience it would be better to end training session then to start yelling because of frustration.

I got this training method from watching tv. get a whistle. dog whistle or otherwise and some chicken. sit ur dog in the house and have him sit and watch u. blow the whistle and give him chicken. do this several times and everytime u blow the whistle give him the chicken. then take him in the back yard and let him run around. blow the whistle and give him chicken when he comes. do this several times. then if ur brave take him out in front of ur house or to the park and try blowing the whistle. give him chicken when he comes. do this for a while and eventually u wont even have to give him chicken anymore. (unless u want to of course)
We have a similar problem, especially when we let the dogs out to go potty. With our two weimaraners and no fence, there is no way we can ever predict if they will come back to the house or if they will find something more curious (often a child or terrified bunny). What we've always done is to carry a clear box of treats out with them and let them see you pull a treat out. Now, when they actually decide to come back to me, I say "COME!" and then gives loads of praise when they arrive. I know that with this command you are supposed to have the dog sit and then move after hearing the command but in this case I'm letting the dog choose to come back to the house and then saying the command while he's on his way. My hope is that he (they) eventually learn that when I say "COME" they need to come to me (regardless of where they are or if they are moving or not). I don't know if that makes a lot of sense but we've found it to be successful so far. Everything takes time and the "COME" command is definitely more challenging. Another more fun way to teach this is this game we learned in obedience class. You need at least two people and lots of treats! One person hides and then calls out for the dog (or dogs). Once the dog finds the person they give treats. Meanwhile, another person hides and then calls out to the dog, giving them treats when they are found. Keep repeating this, hiding in more challenging places and let the dogs sniff you out. Our only problem with this is that our dogs figured out that once they got treats from my husband, they didn't even wait for me to call out. they just immediately ran to find me for more treats. but we had a great time watching them sniff us out!
