I just got a Dachshund. She chases after cats. We have two cat, a three year old and a one year old. We lock the three year old up and leave the one year old cat. When Keida(the dog) see Lilly(the one year old cat) she starts to bark and try to play. When lilly has enough she run from Keida. Keida rans after her, I will yell at her to stop and she ignors me. I grabb her coller and she still crys and barks and pulls. I push her back and she gos again. It's like shes in a zone. She doesn't get out of it till I take Lilly and lock her up. Even after that Keida gos and sniffs around for Lilly and the other cat. So now Lilly and the other cat are always locked up. Then I start to train her. I try to teach her to sit. I did every thing. I pushed her butt down and say "Sit" and give her a treat. I did that for about half an hour and she still didn't learn it. So, I tried where she stands in frount of me and a take the treat and bring it to her nose and back to make her sit and she just backs up. I also say sit when I'm doind it. It doesn't work again. When I try the same thing but where she infrount of a wall so when she backs up she is agenst the wall and it forces her to sit. It doesn't work. I have tried other tricks too and they didn't work ether. Please help me. I want her trained so she is safe and I can have control of her when it's dangous. Please, please, please help me! Frown

This website is very helpful on training tips. I use clicker trianing (there's a link explaining clicker training on the website I provided)for my dog and she learns everything very fast. Also you can try better tasting treats. If all else fails, I would try obeidence classes.
Good luck!

Chrissy92, Your training problem is an easy fix!
The problem is that you are standing!
OK, when you train your dog, always start with at least 10-15 minutes of heel training. Heel training is placing the dog on leash and walking the dog at her pace. Then walk her at a slow pace and then at a run (for the dog's little legs, not yours). Make sure your doggie stays at your side all the while at heel. As doggie gets the hang of heeling you can increase the time for heel training.
Sit-Stay training; After heel training your doggie will be looking for a rest period which should help with the sit-stay training.
For this training you will need to get down to the doggie's level. I recommend getting down to your knees and at her side. You will need to give her the command to sit (once!) then, if necessary, use your hand (should be right hand)to
place it on her back side gently running it over her backside down to backs of her knees with cupping your hand. This action should make her sit because of the gentle action of bending her knees. If need be, at the same time, with the leash in your left hand pull up (gently). You should see the laws of physics take over. by cupping her backside and pulling up on her frontside doggie should be in sit. Repeat as necessary and often. Do not spend an hour on sit stay training dog will get bored. However, spend days training for sit and you should see an improvement. You should notice you will not need to kneel and you should not need to cup her behind.
Your doggie thinks your cats are toys to be played with. I hate to say this but the cats might have to train your doggie when to play and when not to. In other words keep the bandaids handy.
For more details on obedience you will have to take your doggie to obedience class. A class will also teach social skills which might help.

My old dog used to play with my cat by chasing him, then every so often my cat would stop mid run, lie on his back and bat at the dog. They loved each other but still played chase every so often until my dog died. My new dog starts out playing with the cat but is too ruff and when the cat bats him the dog attacks aggressively. Instead of locking them away, the cats need a safe place they can get away from the dog. They may work it out themselves.

Training has to be fun so if you're getting frustrated stop or your dog will learn that "sit" means her human gets frustrated and thats all she'll learn. Laugh when your dog tries something that isn't what you're trying to teach her, her backing up sounds cute. Maybe try training her to back up on command. When you try to train her to sit, cup your arm under her legs to get her hind legs to bend and then make a big fuss when she's first sitting no matter how crooked. Keep training sessions under 15 mins but you can do a few in an evening. She doesn't understand your commands any better than you understand her various barks so be patient, she's trying. Once they get the concept of commands, it gets easier.

I have tried somethine like that with having them out and they get use to eachother. I took my one year old cat with my dog Kedia. I placed my cat infront of me and she laid there. Kedia wagged her tail and started to lick her and stuff. She started to lick her in the face and my cat didn't like it so she ran in this corner. Keida ran to her and started to bark and cry and my cat was hissing. Then my cat ran under my dresser and Keida went after her and my cat clawed her in the nose and she started to bleed and she didn't care she kept going after her. I pulled her back and she kept crying bark for my cat. I put the cat away and Keida kept going under the dresser sniffing looking for her. she like gos in s transe. I need her to stop chaseing them or my larger cat that is three with hurt her badly. He has aready did it to a dog. He doesn't like dog or other cats at first but after a while when there in the house they get use to them but Keida has to stop chasing them.

Yes Chrissy92, your dog wants to play with the cats and your cats enjoy being aloof. In obedience training classes the dog would be on a leash sitting at your side while other dogs are walked around. The training session would be called socialization. So, you would need to consider going to obedience class with your dog or you need to do this type of training at home.
You would need to place your dog on a leash. You would need to be able to place dog in a sit stay or down stay. If your dog moves towards the cat you need to tug the dog back to you. You will need to immediately praise the dog for being by you. The tug is the only correction you will need. Do this repeatedly till dog gets the message. Then, bring dog away from cat after training is done and play with the dog.
I recommend doing this type of training 3 times a day everyday for at least 2 weeks. You should see a change.
I do recommend considering obedience classes so as an instructor can show you how to train the dog.
I am surprised that the swat on the nose the cat gave the dog did not make the dog more cautious.

First, your dog will do what you want for the right reward. Find that you find the key to your dogs brain. My dog loves liver treats. My other dog loves her ball so I use that.

Second, like someone said above you should only train for 15 min at least to start with. Try 15 in the morning, 15 afternoon, 15 at night. It also helps to do things like tell the dog to sit and stay before you give the dog its food. It takes a lot of time on your hands but is worth it.

Third, chase is a natural reponse for a lot of dogs, its nature. When they go to chase say no and distract them, play ball or grab a toy. This shows them don't do that, but yes to this. It is a positive reenforement and I find works best. If matters are too bad to wait and get this to work put up a babygate in the hallway or a bedroom door. The dog can't get past but the cat can jump and excape.

I HATE seeing someone write that they have an untrainable dog.

That statement is not true!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any dog, in any circumstance with the right type of training, can be trained.

If you want her trained, as you stated, YOU as the owner, need to learn how to properly train your dog.

For example: You said you tried to teach your dog how to sit for 30 minutes & then gave up.

The first night of training you expected your dog to learn a command????????

Training is something that is NOT learned in one night!!!!!!!!!!!

A dog's attention span can not handle 30 minutes of training the first night!

When training a dog to learn a command, you only work on it for a few minutes (5-10 minutes at the most) & then stop. You repeat that every day, until the dog learns the command.

OK, now on to the cat problem.

Get a dog crate & put it in the room where you have your cats. Keep the dog in the crate & let him se the cats walking around.

Do not let him out until he calms down & stops barking at the cats. It may take a week or more until he stops barking at the cats.

When you do open the crate door, keep him on a leash & sit in a chair with him sitting or laying down by your side. Let him observe the cats. Do this over & over again, over a period of a few weeks, until he learns how to be comfortable & calm around your cats.

Once you see that he can be in the same room with the cats & he is serene, then you can try letting him off leash & walking by his side through the room as he goes to smell the cats.

If he shows any barking or aggression, it's back in the crate until he settles down. Once he settles down, take him out again, on leash & sit next to him in a chair & make him sit or lay down to watch the cats again from a distance.

Allot of people really believe that training is easy & happens overnight, but it's not.

You need to repeat the same things, over & over again, day after day until the dog learns what you're trying to teach them.

Don't give up on your dog. He's doing what comes naturally.

It's YOU who needs to learn proper training techniques so do your homework on establishing basic commands & make sure you do them on a consistent basis!

Hope this helps you! Good Luck!!!
