A possible reason for a dog to eat his own poop is that the dog food is of the wrong type. I would recommend that you review the type of dog food you are giving the dog. You might enlist your vet if you need help. The dog food you are giving the dog might be high in protein. Therefore when the dog goes poop there is still a high concentration of protein in the food. To the dog's sens of smell it seems OK to eat. You might want to look at a food that has less protein or more veggie in it. Again check with a vet for the details. Now, that you are going to change the dog food, what you do is feed the dog his regular food then after the dog eats that give the dog some pineapple chunks. The pineapple chunks will be sweet for the dog to eat but when it comes out the other end it is not so pleasant.
Copraphagia (sp?) can be caused by a myriad of things... but most likely it's the food.
There is also a charcoal type powder you can buy to sprinkle on the food that makes it wicked nasty when it comes out the other end. I think it's called FORBID or something to that extent.
I agree with bocch. It would probably be best to check with your vet. Charcoal powder is something I'd be leary of. It's used in emergency rooms for poison victims. Google Charcoal Powder. Pumpkin is high in fiber and a good source if your dog is constipated or has diarrhea, go figure. My dogs love plain ol' canned pumpkin. Pineapple sounds really tasty, however, I'm not familiar with the outcome.
Charcoal is completely and utterly safe. My dogs love charcoal biscuits. They're at PETSMART. Old Mother Hubbard or something. They come in a tan and purple bag.
my dog does the same thing and she also eats our other dogs poop, im going to try the pineapple one. so ill try to update on if it worked or not. i hope lol
Two of my dogs eat the poop too. My 2 yr old Maltese, and 6 month old Shih-Tzu. My other two dogs don't. (one 3 and another 6 month old Tzu's). I have used Deter and another brand of the same thing, worked well, then when they were all gone, they went right back to eating it again. I have used it 3 times, and now they just eat it anyway!! I am gonna try the pineapple too....I hope it works. Does anyone know if fresh is better than canned...and how long it will stay fresh in your fridge? I'm willing to try anything as long as it doesn't hurt my wee ones.
vmaise, Sounds like you are only doing half the job. If your dogs are going back to eating poop please, try the following. 1) place all your dogs on a feeding schedule and YOU stick to it. Give your dogs only 15 minutes to start eating. When they stop pick up remaining food. 2) try to feed your dog 2 times a day. Measure the food. Do not over feed. 3) Check the kind of food you are giving the dogs. It may be rich in protein. You might have to change that. 4) You must bring the dogs outside to eliminate. Not being with the dogs when they do this is wrong. The pineapple and or the pumpkin helps, I said helps. If you do not go all the way then your results will be poor. Sorry, if you are disappointed by that. When you have tried all that add, to that the cleaner solutions and get rid of that smell. A dog's nose can pick up smells that people can not. Therefore, if it smells like a toilet to the dog naturally they will poop there.
well mabye that is because the mother did that to clean the litter. So you should put pinaple in the food and it will make the poo taste bad. i hope it works!
it turned out claire was eating her poo cause she was bored. when I started walking her every single day, she stopped eating it! so maybe that's the case with your puppy!
