We found a dog, think it is still very young. Her nipples are hanging so we think she had pups. She seem to have lab in her and she is a beautiful chocolate color. Bought her dog food but doesn't eat much. Likes to walk and swim but lays around much of the day. Didn't get to bring her to vet yet. Why is she not eating much and does she need vitamins?? I can't believe someone let this dog go after she had pups. I also have a toy rat terrier and she thinks this dog is taking over. We tried to put them together but they bark at each other and I'm afraid the lab will try to eat her she is so small. Dog went after her one day, thank god 2 people were around to stop her.
1-put a leash on both of the dogs. you need to do this in the house. 2- you take your dog to a room, and someone takes the lab to a different one 3- tell the other person to bring your dog in. before either one starts barking, distract them with chicken. feed both of them some chicken. 4- the other person takes his dog out of the room, you stop giving them chicken. then you bring your dog in the other room and repeat the whole thing until you see that they don't growl at each other. remember, both of the dogs think they should have dominance over each other. but if you show them that you are the leaders, then they might stop. try telling them to sit before giving them their food. pretend to eat from it. you should "eat" from both bowls. you know, stuff like walking through the door before them, telling them to sit before walks, making them earn pleasant stuff will give 'em an idea of who's in control.
Taking in a stray dog is admirable. You did not do the right thing. You saw the nipples but you did not go to the vet. A signal was sent to you and you did not follow up. If you have not gone to the vet, slap yourself hard and then get that dog to the vet! What is wrong with you? If you can not afford a vet bring it to an animal shelter at least they will see to the proper handling of a dog that might have just given birth or to a dog that has escaped a puppy mill. Stray dogs might not have eaten in days and can get sick for trying to eat regular dog food, seen it myself. Again a vet might have been able to give it the shots needed. A stray might have fleas, ticks or parasites from drinking dirty water and you did not think of that! Man! Did I say get that dog to a vet enough for you to get off the computer and take the dog?
Actually, my concern is with the puppies that she had. Not eating could mean that she missed her puppies tremendously and wanted to get back to them as they would not survive without her. Did you put an add in the lost and found section of your local news paper? At this point, a vet visit would be a good idea.
