I'm 13 and I have a younger sister whom is 9. My parents got the beagle, Mazy from a rescue center. Mazy saw my mom as alpha right away since she yells at her the most. I believe that I'm also alpha, since she doesn't really bite me much at all. But....

She runs around the house and attacks my sister and usally latches on to her arms until we can pry her off. And she just about always breaks skin on her. And my dad, whenever he lies down to watch football or some other sport, Mazy runs around the room and bites him in the face! He also bleeds! It is getting abit out of hand, and my mom Will get rid of her unless we solve this problem. We do give her plenty of exercise, and she has many toys to play with.

But please answer soon, because Mazy doesn't have much time left with us, and I have grown quite attached to her. Please, Please help me!

Beagles are an active dog, needing a bit more excersize than a lot of dogs.

Why don't you give us a description of a typical day for Mazy?

Beagles are very, very active dogs. She needs at the very least, an hour of exercise a day. She needs to get tired out.

When her teeth touches you, even slightly, jerk back and yell OUCH! Then get up and walk off. When she does this, she is just playing and doesn't know any better. When you play with her, don't play any games where you stick your hands in her face. How long was she with her litter mates? Learning how hard to bite is something they usually learn from mom and the siblings.

Obedience training is a MUST! You have a puppy, puppies need socialization. The best you can do for this puppy is find the money and take her for obedience classes. She'll learn some manners and she'll get some socialization. Dogs aren't cheap, and if you can't pay for obedience classes how are you going to pay for quality food and vet bills?

Yelling does not mean 'alpha.' Does your dad and younger sister play with her the most? If that's the case, then that's the reason they are getting bitten the most. She's sees them as playmates.

It sounds like this puppy is quite a handful. Start working with her right away. But, if you can't take her for obedience classes, and your parents are thinking of getting rid of her so soon, maybe a second home will be better. I'm not trying to discourage you, or say that the puppy must have a different home. But it sounds like this puppy needs special training from an experienced dog owner.

well, i called my vet and he said that everything she does leads up to her having mental retardation. he told us to take away her toys and treats. I exercise her and all she can do now is to chew on the furnature. But here's a daliy list of how Mazy's day goes.

at 6:30- 7:00 am, we let her outside anbd bring her in and we play with her.
at7:00am- 3:00pm she's put in her cage until i get home
3:00-4:00pm I bring her for alot of walks
4:00-10:00 In the house with whole family and plays, follows, and sometimes bites.
10:00pm-6:30am sleeps in crate without crying.
that's week days.

Weekends go like this.
10:00am-1:00pm play in house and let her out a few times.
1:00pm-3:00pm walks
3:00-10:00pm house play
10:00pm-10 or 7 am the next day sleep in crate

we feed her from the time she gets up, until 6 pm.

And my Dad and little sister probely play with Mazy the least. I am just about the only one playing with her mostly
and does anyone know any good, cheaper, obidiance classes in Ohio?

Your vet said that? That doesn't make any sense. If biting is the only thing she does, that makes it a behavior problem, not a medical problem. Honestly, I wouldn't listen to a word the vet said. Vets know medical, but they don't expertise in behavior. It's a puppy! Your puppy needs toys to chew on, especially a beagle puppy. And what effect does taking toys and treats away have anyway?

More information would help. Is the biting playing? I just assumed it was. Is there any aggression involved with the biting? Unusual as it would be, it could happen.

Do you free feed her as opposed to keeping her on a feeding schedule?

I will give you some details as to how to walk your dog. Also, an Alpha dog is not the one that yells the most or the loudest.
You walking the dog. You need to have a 6ft long leash on this dog. You need to have your dog start in a sit position at your left side. Always do the same thing with this dog. Dogs need that. You begin your "heel" by saying, 'Mazy, heel!" Then begin your walk. Always keep in control of mazy. She is to be at your left side. Not in front of you or lagging behind you. You begin your walk at Mazy's pace. Due to a dog having four legs and their body being parallel to the ground, their regular walk is a fast walk to humans (see dog shows). Then you need to sort of jog. You say, 'mazy, hurry!' Then you jog for 50 to 100 yards. Your dog always with you at your side. Then back to dogs pace. Lastly, you walk at very slow pace as if you were eating an ice cream cone with, mazy at your side. This kind of walking will establish you as the boss, the alpha dog. You will probably have to use short tugs on the leash. No pulling or dragging the dog. it might help if you had some treats in a fanny pack easy for you to grab. Having treats might reduce the tugging. when you stop walking mazy is to go into a sit at your left side. She is to stay there until you are ready.
You can do this kind of heeling by making a large rectangle path in your yard or a large square or a large circle. You can reverse your walk pattern like a soldier would do an about face. This keeps the dog guessing and keeps you in control.
The heeling should least for 30 minutes. Then it's play time. I recommend using a frisbee or play soccer. Heck' you're a kid you can probably play all day with your dog!

have you tried petsmart? I took a couple of my boys there and it was 100 dollars each, but i doubt i will go there again, cause everyone wants to see your dog. I would suggest google or AKC to look up places. If you lived in southern Ohio I know of a couple of places.

Be sure to check with your vet if you can run her or not - most say to wait for them to be fully developed - at least a year before you take her and jog.
