I have a dog who we have tried and tried and tried to train but its proved a imposable task. the dog in question, his name is CoCo and is a Australian Shepperd Healer Retriever mix dog. His aggression is rather bad. He will attack anyone he doesn't know that gets to close to his master, or enters a house. He loves car rides so much if he gets into the car you have to take him for a ride, any attempt to pull him out will result in aggression. He will growl and snap at even me. He is very hostile towards other dogs. We have tried a lot of things with him, we have disciplined him as he is doing said behavior but nothing seams to work. To be honest i am not really sure what else to do with him, we have tried and tried to tame him but to no avail. If anyone has any ideas it would help me out a lot.
He has possessive/protective and maybe little bit of fear aggression as well.
Is he neutered? If he isn't that's the first thing you need to do. And probably the second thing you need to do is contact a dog trainer and/or a dog behaviorist about this issue. IF it ISN'T fixed right away, it WILL escalate into way much worse aggression.
So, please, contact a dog behaviorist. And I hope this helps you.
Great advice, pawnearsk9training. These issues are often a complex mixture of triggers that are almost impossible to diagnose online. An animal behaviorist, or a professional trainer will be better equipped to get to the root of the problem, and show you how the best way would be to address the issues. Everyone has training tactics that have worked... but what works for one owner and dog does not work for every owner and dog. Good luck!
Hi I highly reccomend the gentle leader in the show its me or the dog she uses the gentle leader on two uncontrolable dogs and they work perfectly with it. Training is much easier because it is like a halter which I agree with completely because I work around horses and whenever we go to bring horses in sometimes we put a rope around there necks and its much harder to lead than with there halter it is far more easier.... you can find a gentle leader at your pet store ( www.petsmart.com or www.petco.com) places like those there are movies to help you train your dog using the gentle leader!! Good Luck!!
Yeah i will try the gentle leader on him. And yes he is fixed, one of the first few things we tried to get him to mellow out. I will see about finding a trainer nearby that could train him.
The Gentle Leader was created to help dogs that pull, not aggressive dogs. I've actually found that when my pointer is wearing hers she is more aggressive. When getting him out of the car, don't pull the leash or anything. Instead, get some treats that he loves and lure him out of the car and give him a treat when he's totally out. You really need to get in contact with a behaviorist before trying to fix the problem yourself. You may have escalated the aggression by "disciplining" him. So get a vet appointment and make sure that he is in good health and start talking to an animal behaviorist.
Yeah, I would never use a Gentle Leader on a aggressive dog especially since she will fight the Gentle Leader when putting it on her. If anything, try to lure him in the Gentle Leader by sticking a treat through the hoop of where the neck loop is.
First, check with the vet to see if the behavior is something to do with his phyiscal condition and to see if he is in good health, if not, when go straight to see a dog behavior to fix the problem instead of you trying to fix the problem and making it worse.
As for, not getting out of the car, I would try what Erl said, and lure him out of the car with a treat that he loves and when he's out praise and reward him.
