Does anyone else engage in rescue/rehab work? I seem to have had the task thrust upon me lately and need some resources. So far the bulk of my 'job' seems to be injured or abandoned birds, but I've also worked with abandoned canines. Are there any good sources on non-raptor avian and non-game mammal rehab out there?

Does anyone have any firsthand advice on rescue/rehab work?

Thanks, you guys! Smile

Have you not tried your local S.P.C.A ??? They work with more than just cats and dogs. Rehab is a big part of what they do. They must rehabilitate animals who have abused, neglected, abandoned, etc. in order to make it so they can be adopted to new, and loving homes. The S.P.C.A in my area has a wide variety of animals; such as horses, goats, sheep, skunks, birds large and small, llamas, pigs, cattle, etc... Petsmart has a volunteer program too, I worked for one when I lived in Maryland. It was a wonderful and heartwarming experience!

Unfortunately our local SPCA has a 72-hour timeframe before an animal is PTS. For a lot fo critters, that's just plain not enough time. Puppies and kittens and horses are usually fine, but older animals or ill animals don't stand a chance around here.

And we have no PetsMart. Silly rural town *giggle*

But thank you so much! And yeah, volunteering with gthe ASPCA or any other critter organization is usually well worth the time.

WinkWhat you said REALLY up set me; but here's an idea for you... Maybe you could rally for those poor animals!!! I think it would be wonderful if you get some people together to get your S.P.C.A. to work on it's way to becoming a "NO kill for room" shelter!!! Our S.P.C.A has adopted this policy and it's wonderful. More animals are given a second chance, and it gives the people more time to rehabilitate the poor creatures that would otherwise have no chance. I am truly hoping you take my idea to heart - we did it here, you can do it there!!! Let me know if you decide and I would love to help you out with some ideas!!!
