REED: Reed seems to be the best guy out there! I don't know what constitutes a "real" "storm chaser", but Reed chases storms, finds them, intercepts, and is always usually in the right spot at the right time. Reed films Tornados and thats pretty much it. sure he might try to collect some data here and there, but he does not claim to be a scientist or one of the snobby guys like Josh. So all you guys who say "oh hes not a real scientist" and "Reed gives "REAL" storm chasers a bad name" you guys are complete lunatics! 1) he does NOT claim to be a scientist, but if he wants to try to collect data then let him! since he is usually in the best position on storms maybe his data is actually useful 2) like i said before, i know know exactly what you have to be/do to be considered a legitimate "storm chaser", but Reed chases storms and he does it well. If Reed isnt a real storm chaser then please explain why he is not, and why he seems to be doing better then the "real" guys. Its funny because Reed seems to always in the best position, gets the best footage, and has the chance to get the best data if he wanted to. Sean and Josh(previous seasons) can never get their crap together and get any useful footage or data. I think Sean should team up with Reed so he can finally get his shot!
SEAN: I think sean is kind of strange, but hes a good guy. he just wants his shot. im glad he made that dog comment in josh's meeting. my advice to sean is TEAM UP WITH REED AND YOU WILL GET YOUR SHOT. Last season, with josh as the leader they got nothing, were always in the wrong spot, and josh lead his team into danger. Meanwhile reed was getting all kinds of great footage and was always in the best spots. Hey, well im sure discovery is paying for everything and what would the show be without seans quest for the shot. maybe discovery doesnt want him to get his shot quite yet because the want the show to continue.
JOSH: I dont know what this guys deal is, but i hate him. From what i saw in previous seasons he has not been very successful at leading sean and collecting his own data AT ALL. Who put this guy in charge of Vortex2?? HA. His record is terrible! I hope he leaves the show.
Josh has been getting great data for years but unfortunately scanning a tornado from miles away doesn't look as awesome as the intercept footage from the promos for next week's show. Plus, Josh reacts to success the exact opposite as Reed. I could see Joel sitting next to Josh saying, talk with less passion it makes you more sciency.
i agree that the scanning from miles away isnt that exciting. i dont know what josh's goal/mission is, but if all he wants to do is scan from miles away and get that type of data then thats fine and im sure he gets plenty of data. I thought that to get better data you need to get closer and get into the twister, isnt that want V2 is about? anyways, thats about data gathering...but his still failed at directing sean into the correct intercept spots, almost like he had no idea what he was doing.
I love your show , you guy's are all awesome and you all do a great service in trying to learn how tornadoes form and move , it will be great if your research can help everyone get earlier warnings and get to safety quicker so there will be less fatality's .
and what happens when states turn around and begin to regulate chasing? What happens when you have to shell out cash to get a license like you do for a car or a gun? or take a safety course? That discussion has come up several times in states in tornado alley. Which is why you can find various essays from scientific chasers cursing the nutjobs like Reed up and down.
There have been countless articles in various publications about convoys of cars 40 to 50 cars long "chasing" a storm.
Cars parked in the middle of the highway and "chasers" interfering with emergency vehicles due to blocked roadways. People have gotten hurt and even died chasing. Whether its from accidents or lightning or whatever the case.
but lets face facts...you have no idea of how good reed or Josh is. Reed seems to be in the right place because thats the way discovery edits the program to be. He was in a great place with that flat tire last episode wasan't he? The fact is, I bet Reed has just as many misses as anyone else, the just aren't shown that often.
Sean is an incompetent..thats all there is to it. If Reed can run around and get near these tornadoes by himself, there is no reason that Sean should be the utter failure that he is. I can't count the number of times josh got the info he wanted because he was in position and Sean for some stupid reason or another just couldn't get it done.
Josh Werman is in charge of Vortex 2 because he is that damn good. You may not think he is based upon this one show, but if you really look at every episode, you realize that Josh has the dow where he wanted it nearly every time.
and No...no no no...V2 is not about getting into the tornado and no, you don't need to get into the tornado to get better data. V2 has no vehicles that would be able to get into a tornado.
As for Josh's "inability" to get Sean into a Tornado...1. The doghouse has had such great success hasn't it?? Oh wait, no they haven't. 2. maybe Josh doesn't "know" what he's doing....no one has ever attempted to use a radar to guide a vehicle into a tornado before to my knowledge. But why the heck should Josh guide him into the tornado anyway...I mean, once your at the storm and you see the tornado, if you can't drive yourself into its path, you got issues. We've all seen Reed stupidly do it multiple times....what's Sean's problem?
i think states should regulate chasing! but only of big convoys like josh's. to have that maybe vehicles "chasing" is crazy!!! do they really need that many!? it seems to cause more problems and delays then just a couple vehicle convoy. one or 2 is not a problem and should not be a problem for local security and police, but when you have to numbers josh does that causes much more congestion and problems. you should have to have a permit for a big convoy like that.
i dont really have any idea how good either one of them is, nor do i really care. i know josh how alot of knowledge and is good at what he does or he would not be in charge of this v2 thing. sure the program edits things, but dont you think if josh was in the right places, as well as sean, they would get the best footage and sean would get his shot!! maybe they show reed all the time because 1, hes in the right spots and gets the best footage! sure hes very dramatic, but hey its TV. also with josh's ego dont you think he would be moaning to the production company to shot him in a better, more successful light? i sure would i was on his high horse. hey discovery channel look how great im doing, look at the great data im getting, look at this footage we got!!
reed is not a scientist! and yes, josh beats him at that, but you have to give the guy some credit. he does get some amazing footage! thats all hes out there for. he doesnt really care about science, he just wants the footage. it seems he knows enough to get him in the right spots. he is probably in the best spots most of the time, thats why there is so much footage of him on the show. also, people i think WANT josh to get his shot, but he always seems to be failing with no opportunity to film anything useful. so what else is there to put in the show to fill up for that? reed! i myself am sick of sean not getting his shot. i know its hard but come on. 5 years! seems reed could have got that shot in 1 season.

you really don't have a clue when it comes to chasing. You think Werman has a large group because he has a few vehicles? The convoys of "chasers" that follow them grow to be 40 to 50 cars long. All of these "chasers" aren't with Josh, they just follow him, without permission no less, and they are the ones blocking roads.
You seem to think that teams like Werman's get in the way...they don't, their professionals. I know of many groups that chase with just as many vehicles and sure, they get in trouble from time to time, but its the idiots who emulate Reed and go out for the thrill that block the roads and cause trouble.
JOSH WURMAN: World renowned meteorologist. The guy studies tornadoes from all angles for a better advanced warning system in the future
SEAN CASEY: Film Maker. Spent what, 10 years creating a Tornado Alley IMAX film and whats the shot to finish his film, as we have heard many times "to have the tornado coming at us and impacting us".
REED TIMMER: Extreme Storm Chaser. Wants close footage of a tornado. And more recently, deploys probes and has installed a radar (CLOVER) for a military project.
TIM SAMARAS: One of the more famous storm chasers. For convential than Reed, but a guy who knows where to find the right storm.
This is why there is nothing but complaints from you people. There isnt a single person in the class of chaser in this group. I like the different groups. It mixes it up. We get four storm chasers, with four goals and four different approaches to their jobs.
Originally posted by wxchaser28: Second, it is a fact that Vortex 2 did consist of 40 vehicles so all 40 of those vehicles were with Vortex 2 and not "followers" as you say, skywrnchsr509.
first off, I wasn't talking about Vortex 2. I am fully aware of what Vortex 2 consisted of..I was talking about the so called chasers who tag along behind actual chasers.
You claim to be a veteran chaser and in that regard, that means you should be more than familiar with Doswell's term of storm chase yahoo. Or the essays that details those stories from Edwards and others....I've read them, but apparently veteran chasers like you haven't. of all people,You, as a veteran chaser, should be very familiar with the stories of long convoys of cars that follow chasers...tag-alongs... Pat Carter, a well known storm photographer is Oklahoma has seen them.
"From his vantage point of Oklahoma, the second most tornado-ridden state in the nation, Carter advises newcomers against storm chasing. Storm chasing caravans are getting high ratings on the nuisance scale in Oklahoma. Carter recalls a recent night when he spotted 75 to 100 cars in a convoy chasing a storm. "It's amazing how many people get out there with the whole family in the vehicle," he says. "
quote:
And what other group(s) do you know of that consists of as many vehicles as Vortex 2? You seriously think there are other groups of chasers that consists of 40 vehicles? I've been chasing for 20 years, Vortex 2 is the ONLY group I know of to consist of that many vehicles.
Again, allow me to reiterate...I wasn't talking about Vortex 2, that started this year, the last few years Wurman had the Dow and a handful of other vehicles with him, the chase tour groups have as many vehicles easily and I'd bet some have even more....but from accounts of many chasers, of which you claim to be, those convoys are out there with as many as 100 cars in them according to reports. One would think you would know about them as a veteran chaser.
Y'know I complained on another thread about how Sunday's show was just a bunch of nerds bickering. Ironically I'm getting a kick out of this thread (nerds bickering).
So, we're all nerds (me too, otherwise I wouldn't be here). I don't chase tornadoes. It's certainly something I'd love to do someday. For now, I'd just like to live vicariously through someone on the tube.
Josh may be a great scientist, but like many brilliant minds, he's socially inept. He doesn't do much interesting on the show other than be bossy. That's not why I'm watching.
I'll put up with Reed screaming and Sean's tantrums for exicting tornado chasing and tornado footage.
