I read where a coastguadman had saved a boat and kept it from sinking, by inflating a couple of rafts in the hold. it allowed the boat to float long enought to pump out the water.
If the rafts were puntureproof they could be used anywhere on the boat, maybe mounted in the gunwails. maybe big enought for a ship?
