Being Japanese, I've always been interested in Aikido, and since Steven Seagal is legit, America has gotten some exposure as well. I saw an episode of Sambo on Human Weapon and I would love to see Jimmy and Doug go to Russia.
Aikido would be a great show. The joint locks and throws used from jujitsu combined with the body movements of sword and spear fighting would make for an awesome quest.
I have been studying aikido for about one year now, and as much as I would like to see that on the show, studying for one week will give you NO CHANCE against a Dan level (black belt) akidoist.
Honestly, I'd rather see some old-school Aikijutsu, like Daito-Ryu, or koryu Jujutsu, which includes some of the more lethal combative techniques that modern Aikido doesn't usually emphasize.
Actually, it would be interesting to see these guys face “Dan” level aikido practitioner. If they actually sparred and didn’t just do the usual choreographed routine one sees all the time. I would love to see true Aikido in an actual combat sparring match. Besides every style mentioned has the hope that the guys will not “stand a chance”. I think you draw far too many distinctions between “styles” especially the Japanese systems and assume that the guys (if not trained in whatever style formally) have no experience to draw from. Also like 5 days is plenty of time in any style except (your style here) because it’s so advanced or intricate. I don’t want to see a rehearsed routine, I want to see free sparring, that would be very cool. If the “Dan” levels them, well that’s what they’re there for, right?
I second the notion of a Sambo episode. The image of Doug and Jimmy on the Russian steppe wearing cossak hats while leg locking one another is just irresistable!
