Does anyone know of any good websites with real information about pit bulls? I would like to know more information. Pit Bulls are my favorite dogs, even though I have a loving dog of my own. He isn't a pit but I still love him. I want a pit bull, but my mom won't let me get one.
Before you get a Pit talk it over with your mom and educate her about how wonderful they are. My mom tends to believe a lot of the stereotypes about Pits but when she asks me if they are true I say no and tell her that those are just myths. There is a website called PitBull Rescue Central that has lots of information about owning PitBulls and has pictures of dogs that are up for adoption. There link is www.pbrc.net. Good luck!
Thanks pitbullfan for your reply. Yea same here my mom tends to belive people adn their thoughts about pit bulls. It's really annoying and she gets gets me so mad becuase she is like going against pit bulls or whatever. She doesn't like them much. When I told her about how Miami police treat pits, she is like well they are dangerous and vicious dogs that can be dangerous towards people. I was like geez mom read information on your own before believing other people. Once my mom told me like a few blocks away from me their is this old man who owns a old pit bull that he rescued, meanwhile he beats the dog. That is so wrong, I feel really bad for that dog. I don't know if the dog is still alive since it is old, but if I was his neighbor, i would sure call the police on him, for mistreatmeant toward his dog. At least my dad doesn't hate pits. He thinks their cute and my dad feels bad that they are misunderstood.
I know that I'm going to upset some people with this post, but it's important for people to have accurate information about Pit Bulls. Too many Pit Bulls end up being abandoned or euthanized because the owners didn't take any time or effort to understand the breed.
Pointers are bred to point; many do so without any training. Retrievers are bred to retrieve; they can become obsessive ball-fetchers without any encouragement. Pit bulls were bred to fight other dogs; at about eighteen months some of them "lock on" and become aggressive toward other animals. They are not "bad"; they are just doing what they were bred to do.
Most Pit Bulls do not become aggressive toward people unless encouraged to do so. This is because the owners of fighting dogs needed to be able to remove them from the ring without being bitten.
It is a disservice to the Pit Bull breed to ignore or deny their heritage. Anyone who claims that Pit Bulls are no more animal-aggressive than any other breed is not helping the breed. They are actually creating an environment of ignorance about the breed. That can result in tragic incidents that just create further problems for the breed.
It is true that not all Pit Bulls are bred from fighting lines. But it is important to understand the nature of the dog, since you are taking legal responsibility for its behavior.
You should never adopt a Pit Bull from someone that isn't registered with the AKC (not that I have any love for the AKC). Any breeder should be emphasizing that their dogs are bred for family life. Any breeder who talks about "protection" is a no-go.
If you get a Pit Bull from a shelter you should demand to know the entire history of the dog.
Only experienced dog owners should adopt Pit Bulls. They are a wonderful and loving breed but they are not a low-maintenance breed.
Pit Bull puppies should be socialized with other dogs and with people from the earliest age. They need lots of training based on positive reinforcement and should never be subjected to negative reinforcement without the advice of a professional trainer.
True, Pits are able to a lot of damage in the wrong hands and because of bad genetics and irresponsible people some are just accidents waiting to happen. I have never owned a Pit or owned any dog period. But I think through my extensive experience with the breed and all the reading I have done on them I would say it wouldn't be a problem.
I have seen many irresponsible people take their Pits to the park and see them fight with other dogs. One person told me "oh he's just a little protective" when their dog growled at another dog. This seriously concerned because ten minutes later that dog was fighting with another Pit! I want to tell these people for the sake of the breed to not bring their dog to a park anymore. But that wouldn't work because I would end up getting yelled at and to mind my own business.
So Jeffrey, you said that anyone who adopts from a shelter should know the entire history of a dog. Well that presents a problem when a lot of Pits come as strays. Are dogs a liability because of their unknown history? Are these problem dogs? What about dogs who are in rescues who came as strays? Sometimes you can't get the whole story about a dog as much as you try. Then what do you do?
Anyone who does their homework, sees past all the nasty comments, media hype and is responsible is a good candidate as a PitBull owner.
that applies to all breeds. you should research ANY breed before you adopt. If you're going to a shelter it will help to know what kind of personalities you could be dealing with if you find a mixed breed. For instance, labs may be smart but beware they can be very destructive when left alone. Dalmations usually dont tolerate children well despite their cartoon personalities. Does that mean all labs are destructive and all dalmations dont like kids? We all know the answer. And if you check the history of most dogs, they were either bred to hunt or fight or both. Not a lot of lap dog breeding going on in the gladiator days. Some, but only for royalty. Dont forget to be reasonable about size. If your not home or are not active dont get a medium or large dog and drive it mad just because it was cute or looked cool and you wanted it. Shelter dogs deserve a chance. Theres no guarantee from a breeder. And if your not going to take the time to train there's no excuse and no one to blame but yourself for bad behavior and that goes for all breeds! If there's no history on a dog your looking at do some research on temperment testing and do some of your own tests like food aggression, submissiveness, bring kids and your other pets. And that goes for all breeds. You dont have to be anyone special to own a pit. Just be responsible, keep them socialized, do training, and be prepared to be amused. And that as well goes for all breeds.
No one said anything about any other breeds. I assume that anyone who wants a particular breed does their homework there too. I'm not saying you have to be special to own a Pit but it's nice to see responsible people with Pits. It makes me feel so relieved to see the flip of side of what I dread which is some young immature kid who reaks of low self-esteem and tries to make up for it with a "tough" dog.
might be an L.A. based group called the Downtown Pit Bull Rescue. I don't know if they have a website, but you can try Google-ing them. It's run by a woman who was a super model and a popular DJ, so finding something about them shouldn't be hard. They may have been featured on an episode of AdoptionTales.
"Any breeder should be emphasizing that their dogs are bred for family life. Any breeder who talks about "protection" is a no-go."
NEVER get a puppy from a breeder. NO SANE OR RESPONSIBLE PERSON on this earth breeds pit bulls and brings more into the world when there are so many being dumped and euthanized.
And AKC papers are USELESS. All it takes is a form and a check and presto! you've got AKC papers. There are problems with forged papers, false info, etc. Papers do NOT mean that a dog is OK for health or behavior reasons. For heaven's sake, even the puppy mill dealers (with their sick, defective dogs) get AKC papers!!! AKC has no meaning.
The best way to adopt a pit bull is through a reputable breed rescue group that has been in existence for many years and has a long history of successful placements evaluations. Contact a large reputable shelter like ASPCA. Many times they have referrals to the good rescue groups, and know of the best rescues and may even have worked with some.
But stay away from breeders!!! They are breeding for one reason- to make $$. With all the pit bulls dying, there is NO REASON on earth to breed more. Most of them are fronts for fighting dog rings, and you can get into real trouble with those dogs.
If you are a resposible pit bull owner, and bring them up the right way, I don't see how much trouble you can get into, expeicially if your not fighting Pit bulls and if you just have a pit as just a regualr pet. If you keep pit bulls in a safe envoirment and out of trouble, and keep them happy. Yea I understand you can get into real trouble with Pit bulls, if you fight them or mistreat them ot whatever. Those are the righ people to be owning one!!! I think it's so sad how people think how funny it is to watch a pit bull fight and just laugh about it!!! WoW that's so freakin sick!!! Those types of people have no feelings. They are just fighting pit bulls to see the winning pit and the losing one dead and just becuase they are making tons of money off of them by fighting them!!! It's disgraceful how cruel people are and can be these days. I've seen pics of pit bull fights, it's horrible and awful to see what people do to these wonderful and beautiful dogs. These dogs need our help. not our hate.
