I saw the episode tonight where Cozy "bite the tip" off the female trainers finger. Did he reaaly bite the tip clean off or just some skin and her fingernail?
If a chimp did something really realy bad like kill other chimps or worse, kill a trainer, are they put down for such an action and considered unable to be rehab'ed?
In some cases, yes. If there is an attack of a human from an animal in National Parks then the park officers have two options, one is to eithanize the animal, and the other is to find a zoo that will try to take in the animal. They will first try to find a zoo to take the animal, if they cannot find one, then they will put the animal down. The reason they do not put the animal down is because all attacks on humans are due to a reason, I have been doing my studies on Big feline animals, Bear species and Canid species and have learned all attacks on humans are for a specific reason, protection of their youngs, food, protection of themselves etc are the main reasons animals attack humans, although most of the animals I study rarely attack humans. In the situation of Cozy, I would not think they would put her down, these animals are endangered and the "SANCTUARY" would not put Cozy down because they know by doing that they would be helping the population decrease instead of increasing. This is true to all sanctuaries and zoos. A young Polar Bear was brought in to the Berlin, Germany zoo when his mother abandoned him after birth, the Polar Bear was being hand-raised by humans and was being fed through a baby bottle, this angered animal rights group which thought that by hand-raising and bottle feeding the bear the humans are embarressing the animal who has had a rich history of being a powerful animal and not displayed as a wimp which they believed the Berlin zoo was doing. The animal rights group was erging the zoo to put the animal to sleep because they were hand-raising the animal, they could not let the animal back into the wild being so young, so they urged the zoo to put the animal down, thankfully the zoo "DID NOT" put the animal down because it said if it did that then it would be one of the contributors that is decreasing the population of the Polar Bears. I am sure that Eugene's situation is similar and knowing how bad things are going with Chimps now, they would not put the animal down. In my opinion, I believe any wild animal can be trained to be more sociable to humans and other animals, it will take time, but it is possible for all types of animal species and individual animals.
From the looks of one of the previews, it looks like it may be Zao that starts to be mean to the little ones--surprising if true after the way Zao hugged Zena after she almost ran away. Eugene was saying the natural hierarchy might be a bit messed up due to his having to step in and comfort Cozy.
Yes, but the commercials are always missleading to get the viewers to anxiously watch the next episode. I am not saying there will not be any rough times for the 5 new chimps, but may be the commercial just showed Zao near the new chimps for curiosity, but the commercial made it more then what it really was, but I could be wrong and there really was some physicallity going on.
Cozy did indeed bite off the entire first joint. Jessica Ney is the chimpanzee behaviorist at the Sanctuary, and as such was not trying to train Cozy to do anything. Jessica reports that while she was doing a bit of grooming on Cozy's hand she became distracted.. Cozy took advantage of this and pulled her finger through the bars and bit the tip off.
In this case human error is at fault, as chimpanzees are dangerous animals and one must always be on guard. Ms. Ney is still standing strong at the sanctuary, albeit sans finger tip, because she is a passionate scientist and she realizes that this was the action of a wild animal behind bars. (Even if Cozy is crazy!)
As far as Cozy, Joao, and the babies.. Chimpanzee behavior is much more violent than makes for comfortable viewing on occasion. Though it may appear quite violent a bit of "sorting out" (as Phillip Cronje calls it) has to occur for hierarchy to be established.
Rest assured that professionals have planned for the introduction of the infants, have weighed the pros and cons, and have decided that this calculated risk is worth the effort.
