I brought home a stray kitten whos mother had given birth to in a garage at an abandoned house, he had 3 other siblings, was about 5 weeks old at the time, they were all scared hissing and spitting. I took him home at 5 weeks (or so) figuring he would adjust to being a pet and learn to like me. I contined to feed the others but after a few days they were gone, just took off. Anyway he is 9 months old now, not lovable, likes to be on his own (which is fine) he loves my other cat and dog (cuddles with them) tolerates my husband and 2 kids ages 7 & 11. But- He HATES me! I am the one who feeds him, changes his litter, brushes him (he has long fur) and I understand he hates to be brushed so i only do it about 5 min a day. He likes to go outside and sneaks out any chance he can. I dont want him out so I pick him up when someone opens the door so im sure that one of the reasons he hates me. But now it has become really bad. If he wants out and I wont let him, he attacks me, he chases me, bites and scratches me and lunges at me. He even hisses and growls at me just for walking past him. Im afraid of him now. He is scheduled to be nuetered this Friday. Will that help? Why does he hate only me??? Ive never been mean to him other than pushing him off me when he is biting me. Hes really cute, long fur cute chubby face, fluffy tail and I bother him a bit because I want to hold him and pet him. One time I kissed him and he scratched me right in the face. I am frustrated!! I feel like he is unappreciative and could be living outside in the cold. its 3 degrees out now (michigan)and I just had to let him out because he was chasing me and biting me. There are alot of strays out there who love a home. WHAT is wrong with him??? or what am I doing wrong?? please help.

My cat had two litters of kittens before we got her fixed. but, the 2nd litters dad was a stray and when they were put on hard food at 12 weeks, they would hiss, bite and scratch to keep me away from there food!and you're cat will act better when he is fixed and he wont have any kitty urge to find a girlfriend! Smileand he will live longer too! hope your cat will love you more! hope I helped! good luck

Thanks, I sure hope it helps. He is not food agressive with me, although he does push my other cat out of the way to eat her food and she just deals with it and waits for him to finish. He also "uses" me when he wants some of my people food (Im the only person in the house who will share with the pets-lol) I think he does have alot of kitty girlfriends since when one is by our house is usually when he gets mean with me. So hopefully thats the reason and in 2 days the party is over for him. My other cat and dog worship me!!! Im getting a complex with him-lol- I think both of his parents were strays I seem the mom when I was feeding them but she would never come near me, so maybe its in his genes - who knows?? but thanks for the advice. its re-assuring.

What kind of breed of cat, and are your kids boys, girls, or both? Some cats don't like girls or boys. My cat likes girls more than boys.

hmmm. Maybe thats it. He is a boy and My kids are both boys too. So I am the only girl around. He did get nuetered and is home recovering now, he hasnt been mean to me yet but Im sure its because he doesnt feel up to chasing me right now-lol. He even jumped up on the couch next to me and layed down, that was a FIRST! He has bit me since he's been home and it was because he wanted food so he bites me in the ankles when I walk into the kitchen. I try not to bug him much because thats when he gets up and walks away but he is sooooo cute, I just want to squeeze him. He is a really long haired Gray Tiger striped Tabby Named Scrappy. Right now he is sleeping in bed with my 11 yr old. But things are starting to get better, nuetering may have helped. I'll update soon.
Thanks for the comments.

ok, its me again and am having more problems with Scrappy the demon cat. He is all better now, back to chasing me and biting (only me) and now that he has been nuetered he doesnt go out as much or for as long but he has started humping my other cat (the female) he never did this before!! That is the weirdest thing especially since he is now nuetered!! He bites her in the neck and holds her down and she screams and I have to constantly get him off her (even at 3AM!!!!)
Anyone ever heard of that happening???

It takes several weeks to clear the hormones out the system after a neutering. Since he had only been neutered a few days before the stated incident, your kitty is not yet aware of his new nonsexual status. In a few weeks, you will notice a marked change in his behavior.

My cat was a stray and didn't like to be pet or held. Play therapy helped. He now meows for attention and is very social with my hubby and me, although he still doesn't like strangers. Try doing 2 to 3 play sessions a day. This will help your cat bond with you and other humans. The cat dancer works well. So do shoe strings and laser lights. Some shelters offer a behavior help line, you can check that out. Good luck to you.

Have you sprayed him with water when he's being bad? I would give him treats when he is being good to encourage that behavior. Another thing you can do is get a small metal can and put some coins or rocks in it and throw it on the floor when he starts to attack (it will startle him). Cats hate loud noises. I have also taken a towel/blanket and thrown it on the cat just as it begins its attack and put it into total darkness. Or you can dump a whole glass/bucket of water on him, that ones messy but sometimes effective.

Get a fishing pole type toy for playtime and try some playtime therapy. I make my own from old fishing pole ends and tie some feathers with a stretchy cord. We have a play rug and when I sit on that rug they know it is playtime and they come running.

For biting I have taken away all of kitties food and fed them by hand. If they bite they get a loud NO and I take away the food for 15 to 20 minutes and we try again. The only way they get food is from my hand and they don't get it if they bite. They soon learn you don't bite the hand that feeds you.

This is weird but you could put foil around your ankles until he gets the idea. Cats don't like tin foil.
Better yet:
You could take a pair of slippers or socks and spray them with the Feliway Comfort Zone spray
you can get it at the pet store. It is supposed to release pheromones that mimic the friendly scent a cat produces in its cheeks.

I like positive reinforcement so anytime kitty is doing something positive even for a short minute I give them a treat and tell them what a good kitty they are.

My Toby used to hate being groomed but I learned that she would tolerate it for 5 minutes and now we are up to 15 minutes and then she gets a few treats and the more time the more treats she gets.

I hope some of these are helpful so you can enjoy your cat.
