I've been using fresh step litter for a while and have recently considered switching to feline pine. But since it's made of pine... do there eyes get glssy or fogged over. because cats kick in their litter box i don't want it getting in their eyes. Any suggestions about that litter, or others? Also I foster so does it work for multi cats?
I tried Feline Pine once. My female had a very bad reaction to it. Her eyes swelled up and had a yellow discharge to them. The vet gave me drops for her but told me to stop using it immediately. Some cats are sensitive to that stuff. I use Tidy Cat mulitple cat and it works awesome in my house.
It is a good idea, the Feline Pine, but I don't know if my cat understood that it was cat litter; since before we too used Fresh Step. He didn't like the feeling on his paws, and he ended up going to the bathroom right outside the litter box.
In the end; we went back to Fresh Step.
You may want to give it a try, it may work for your cat, it's more of a trial and error I think.
Thanks you've been very helpful. i'm not using feline pine! If you are ahppening to be looking for a new cat litter you could try this stuff called Worlds best cat litter. It's really good because when you have something clumped on the bottom of the litter box it slides right of. Made of 100% Corn (Its cut up to be really small) It doesn't mask the smell as well as some but i think it's worth it. Thanks again
I use fresh step and wouldn't switch to Feline Pine. My cousin{cat and dog expert}uses Tidy Cats and her cats like it. You see some times it clupms and for some reson thats bad. Its just like food. Sometimes you like it sometimes you don't. It DOES work for multi cats. The Best of luck
If there isn't any specific reason to change your litter and kitty is happy with it, I wouldn't create a problem by changing litters. If you do change be sure to do it gradually otherwise kitty may stop using her box if she doesn't like the new stuff. Cats usually don't like scented litters, too dusty, the feeling is pleasant to the foot, lots of things to consider. Check out: www.cats.about.com
Feline Pine is a unique cat litter. Their are two different types, the pine pellets and the pine scoopable. I have worked for the Humane Society and all they use is the Pine Pellets for the cats there, and I also have 2 cats at home. Some cats really need a transition stage for the pine pellets which most people combine it with their normal cat litter (usually clay clumping) and that works well. I also know that all of the pine oil is completely removed through the production process of the pellets. For my 2 cats at home though I use the Feline Pine Scoopable, which works wonders. It is actually like a saw dust but it clumps! It also still doesn't have all the terrible chemicals that the clumping litters have. I would deff. give both of them a try, but I know that the Scoopable worked best for me! Best of Luck to you.
My foster kitten was not liking my fresh step cat litter. We needed to switch and every cat i ever had has done fine with litter switches. it's not a big deal.
Well, for some cats it is a big deal. My cats will not use the scented litters. They will go beside the box. So it is best to proceed with changes slowly. As I said I wouldn't creat a problem with the litter box unless it was totally necessary.
If your cat has a bad reaction to the pine stuff-and you still want to try a clay free litter-try shaved cedar horse bedding. That works for some kitties.
I've got 2 kitties and 2 litter boxes, and they use whichever one they want. Having 2 litter boxes might be good for changing the litter - you could change it in one and see if they use it. That way, if they don't like the new one, they'll use the old one.
I use the walmart brand Special Kitty clumping scented. I think it works great and you get 18kg for under $10! Just dont buy the special kitty food...its horrible!
I don't use feline pine, but I do use pine pellet horse bedding. It's called equine pine and its like 6 bucks for 40#. I really like it because it breaks down to saw dust when they pee. It doesn't trak thru the house, and it smells really nice. My boy loves using it, my girl is still getting used to it.
I tried feline pine, gradually mixing it with fresh step, my petite tabby, Kiki, used it right away, but Norton, my big tuxedo kitty was harder. He wouldn't use it, eliminated just outside of the box, so I had to switch back to fresh step. Within the lst month however, I have switched them both to the Pet Ecology Perfect Litter, which is biodegradeable, only available online, however. They will send you a 2 weeks supply, however, for free, only .95 ship chrg, is totally flushable, so we can scoop and clean every time the bathroom is used, as that is where their box is located. I just got my 1st mo supply, weighs total of 4lbs! This is also advertised on Animal Planet. The very best thing about this litter is that it alerts you to FLUTD, feline urinary tract disease. If your cat has a urinary tract problem, it will turn pink, or dark red if severe! I was concerned about my kitties, because they both drink a lot of water, but all indications are that they are fine. You might want to give this a try, I'm glad I did, no tracking either. Hope this helps.check their website petecology.com if you like.
I've used several brands with my kitty. He doesn't seem to care what litter we put in. I liked Feline Pine because it was all natural, as far as I know BUT our kitty would track it ALL OVER the house. There'd be pieces of Feline Pine (scoopable) in my bed. He's also black, so you can tell how much dust settled on him, and it was a lot more than with regular clay litters. He also had a lot of Pine left between his toes and although it says it's safe, I still didn't want him licking all that.
