When I got my new kitten (3 months old) she was very thin and looked like the runt of the family, I was told that she ate siphicate kitten food.. which i bought for her. She just looked at it and cried although my full grown (and already overweight) cat had no problem eating it. She nibbled a little at the adult food but did not really eat it. I tried to give her a can and not she will not even touch the dry food. I have heard that they shoudl be eating dry food and wet food only as a treat. I have bought almost every type of dry food but still she just looks at it and cries for the wet food. I try to give her a can (which at 4 months, she eats the entire can within 1/2 an hour) only when i get home from work. I leave the dry food out all day for her. She seams to look skinnier but i do no tknow if it is from growing or that she is just not eating anything until i get home. Any suggestions?

Thanks!!

try slowly switching her over by smashing the dry food and mixing it in with the wet food and graudally put less and less wet food in there also make sure you are giving here kitten food adult cat food can be too big for her to eat also it wont have the right nutruitional value for a kitten. good luck!Razz

wet food isn't bad for kitty either just use good stuff like fancy feast or what she likes leave dry down for her to snack on she'll nibble on it on and off. might try whiskas chicken flavor my poojums likes that he real finicky and then some hard kitty treats like tempting temptations also lot's of fresh water.

the main reason you probably heard that wet cat food is bad is because hard food is good for their teeth.

I'm new to this forum and see that this post is over a year old. So my advice may not help Reneeny but hopefully toher. I side with Dawgpup's advice, but I'm not convinced Reneeny may be dealing with a healthy situation. It is true that dry food is perferred to maintain healthy teeth & gums but it can really be painful if a cat has an infection or abscess. If several attempts are made like Reneeny has done with no luck I would encourage the owner to feed the cat whatever it will eat and get the cat's mouth & teeth examined by a vet. If the owner can not afford a vet, they should call pet stores and rescues to see what low to no cost options are available. Refusing anything but soft food may indicate the cat is in pain from inflammed gums or an abcessed tooth or tooth coming in wrong. Dawgpup has great advice on how to acclimate a cat to dry food, but this struggle indicates something else may be wrong. I am speaking form experience. I adopted my cat a little under 1 year of age. She was eating dry and a very neat eater. Six months after I had her she started dropping food. As experts suggest, I gave her wet food as a treat. She seemed to be holding out for that and making a bigger mess with the dry so I took her to the vet. Turns out she had two abcessed teeth. I was shocked to learn she was not only in a lot of pain but had been that way on or before she started dropping the food. She had an exam when I got her so the whole mess must of started shortly after I got her. Because she was young I was lucky the untreated infection didn't damage other organs due to secondary infections.

Best wishes,
Snickers Mom
