I live in a building where pets are not allowed. It's a nice building in a good neighborhood where there are about 12 other condos, almost all owner condos, and the other condos accept pets. Our condo rules against pets includes no dogs, cats, fish, birds, hamsters ..... any kind of animal. In fact, someone put a bird feeder outside their first floor window and they removed the bird feeder.

I recently sent around a survey to the building asking what the owners wanted regarding pets. The results showed that most people said no dogs. Some said no cats. But the funny part is that a large number of people said you could have fish, but not more than one!! And you couldn't have an aquarium. What do you keep it in, the sink or tub? Most owners felt you should be able to have a bird. The assocation says no birds because of the "noise" they make, and our building is surrounded by trees with chirping, singing birds. What difference does it make if a bird is chirping in a condo or in a tree. One of the reasons for not having a dog is because it will "dirty" the yard. Well we have 12 50+ units buildings on the block and the dogs are using our yard, or course people also pick up after their dogs.

I think this is sad. We have many elderly owners who would like to have a pet, especially when they've been widowed. You can't even have a visitor with a pet. If you have a visitor with a dog, cat, etc, you are fined $50. I know you love pets. This is so nutty. Help!! How can you get this changed? Can a building tell an owner of his/her condo whether or not they can have pets? Aren't you responsible for the inside of your unit? Let me know your thoughts.

I think you should be able to have pets! it's stupid for people not to let you have pets. not even FISH!!! they're FISH!!! what are thy gonna do, sneak out of they're tanks and steal stuff? and birds are not NOISE!!! I would love to have a bird in my room to wake me up every morning. I think african greys aren't that noisy. AND they're smart. who wouldn't like the company of one of those?
and finally, I would die if I didn't have the company of a dog!!!
