Sorry to pull up an older post, but, actually, Royal Canin is not even CLOSE to being ranked on the higher end of dog foods. If you're purchasing from PetSmart, the best choice there is probably Blue Buffalo. It's ranked multiple tiers higher than Royal Canin on this website. Notice that Royal Canin is only given one star (even Nutro is above it) and Blue Buffalo is given four.

The website doesn't pull up, and those rankings were my opinions based on ingredient base. I'm not a dog food professional, but I'm very good at reading labels.
Sorry, the website pulls up for me. But its not really based all on opinion. It takes an anaylysis of the labels and contents (percentage of meat, whether by-products are used, percentage of grains, use of ethoxyquin-free sources, etc.) Really, it is what you probably do if you are educated and read the label. It's just all laid out for those who don't know exactly what to look for. Another good source is the Whole Dog Journal, but it includes Royal Canin (which there seems to be a lot of debate on its inclusion.) It's not about being a "dog food professional," it's about doing research and coming to a conclusion about which foods will work best for you and your dog(s).
