I am really disgusted with Animal Planet right now. On Emergency vets, there was a 7yr old girl that had ring worm. She brought the pig in for treatment, assuming that's where it came from. They ended up euthanizing the pig because the ringworm came back! WTH? The pig's housing was also completely inadequate. Why would the vet agree to euthanizing a pig for this reason? Why didn't he educate the owners that the cavy was getting improper care? Isn't Animal Planet supposed to promote proper animal care? I wrote to viewer relations and called the HSUS, but I'm really disturbed about the whole thing. Shame on Emergency Vets and Animal Planet for airing that episode!

I agree, gg. I did not see the show, but have heard several different accounts of it. A complete reckless disregard for cavy care was shown and exercised, by both the mother and the vet. The vet showed more than just disregard, he seemingly violated his own profession in allowing the series of events to take place as they did. The Animal Planet website apparently upholds and supports rescues, shelters, adopting of pets, etc., how come their featured "vets" would not be encouraged to exercise and urge this option in cases such as this??? What's even worse is the people put the one piggy to sleep and then went out and bought another (probably from a pet store). I am sure the first time this kid comes down with a cold or something, the pig will be the first thing to go!

Unfortunately this is not the first time Animal Planet has shown its total lack of respect or care for guinea pigs. I did not see the episode of E vets discussed because I have been boycotting Animal Planet completely after they showed two guinea pigs being TORTURED on a Pet stars episode and never even responded to the email I sent them about it (besides, of course, the auto response). I would like to think this channel that is supposedly so dedicated to animal welfare would research and learn about ALL animals before airing potentially dangerous information about them. Until things change, my boycott continues.....

I never watch the show anyway. But is still sickening to know that it goes on. Many people look upon guinea pigs as "rodents", which I guess technically they are, (although I am not particularly fond of that classification), and no one wants a "rodent" i.e. mouse, rat, etc. in their house, they are viewed as a nuisance and therefore don't care as they would if it were a dog or cat or some other common household animal. And lets face it, there are ALL species of animals around the world who are not taken care of and are probably put to sleep for this same stupidity every day. So anyone who doesn't like piggies should replace the story with the word "dog" or "cat" and see if your feelings change then.

I was also quite distressed by this episode of Emergency Vets. How easy it would have been to provide some guinea pig care advice to this family. I'm also shocked that any vet would just go along with euthanizing an animal for ringworm, especially when it tested negative. Simply apalling. This type of unresponsible behavior on the part of the vet and Animal Planet for airing the segment unfortunately perpetuates the belief many people hold that guinea pigs and other small animals are "disposable" pets. I won't be watching Animal Planet for quite some time. Sadly this was one of my favorite channels until now.
