I don't think that your guinea pig would even eat straw. Straw is bedding not food, I have never even heard of any animal being fed straw. Try and see if your mom can take the straw back, and get some hay. You are going to want to get Timothy Hay, Alfalfa shold only be used as a treat. If you can't return the straw, your piggy might enjoy using it for a nice soft bed.
No. Guinea pigs need hay, they can't eat straw. Straw isn't good to use for bedding either. It's not a bit absorbant and is normally pretty sharp so it can poke the poor piggies in the eye.
You need timothy hay for pigs older then 6 months. Alfalfa is higher in calcium so it's only good for young pigs(under 6 months), and pregnant or nursing sows.
i know its not absorbant thats why i put wood shavings under it!I know they arnt supposed to eat it! I put it in there for bedding but they do eat it! i cant help it, i was just wondering if it was ok for them!
I doubt it'll hurt them to eat it but for further reference don't get it again. You'll want to get them real hay now. Pigs shouldn't go without hay any longer then a day.
Straw has no nutritional value, so it would provide empty calories for your Guinea Pig friends. They need an unlimited supply of grass hay at all times, fresh dark leafy greens, fruits and veggies high in vitamin C, and a high quality pelleted diet.
With proper care your Guinea Pigs can enjoy a long and happy life with you.
Straw also promotes mold growth once wet, which is also very bad for the pigs (and humans), so I wouldn't recommend it as bedding either. Go to guinealynx.com and cavycages.com for all the care info you'll ever need (other than a real live vet.)
