I just got a 6mo. old white lab pup from the shelter. I couldn't wait to start working with her on training and day trips to the ranch. I was really sad to find out that she has no idea how to play with toys and has ZERO interest in retrieving. Any suggestions in lighting an interest?
Have you tried clicker training? If so, it would be rather easy to shape. Start out by clicking and treating (c/t) for when they look at the object, and slowly progress to having her take it from your hand or touch it. Here's a short video on training it.
You can also use toys that are stuffed with food in them for awhile to spark an interest. Also, how long have you had her? It may just be that she hasn't adjusted yet, and will have an interest in toys later.
Thanks! I foster puppies so I have seen alot but never this... I usually have to work on what not to do! The video is great I will work on that... we have already worked on the toys with treats, she was a little more interested.... I will keep working on it.
Some dogs just don't have the desire to do what they were originally bred for. Like my beagle, he could care less about going on a hunt. Some dogs just need a little more patience and training to help them actually do their job.
Some dogs have no interest in retrieving until they're older. My retriever wouldn't retrieve until she was over a year old. Now she LOVES bringing me toys to play with. If your dog brings you a toy, play with her and make a big deal out of it. Eventually she'll realize that bringing things to you is fun. Like the other posters said, you could also try clicker training. Congrads on your new pup!
Since you just brought her home not too long ago, she's probably still a little unsure in her new surroundings, and being a little older, it will probably take her a little longer to adjust than a younger puppy. Give her some time to adjust, and in a few weeks, you'll probably be wondering what happened to that quiet little puppy you brought home from the pound.
