I have a 3 year old Weimaraner and she eats everything she can get her paws on!! I can't leave anything on the kitchen counter unsupervised. If the door is closed to the kichen she scratches the door. She tries to take it right out of the persons hand. I have heard to leave food out with chili pepper on it but will that hurt her stomach? PLEASE HELP!!!

What i did was purposly left food out where he could get it and watch him. When he went for the food i made a very loud noise. This distracted him and i rewarded him for this. I did this for about 5 mins a day for a bout 2 weeks and he eventually stopped.Hope it helps. Keep us updated on any improvements.

Stop leaving things out. Big Grin

If you have to leave things out such as when you're thawing something; put it in the oven or microwave. When she discovers there isn't anything for her to get into anymore; she'll stop scratching at the door.

You can also leave a very hot microwaved potato or hot dog within her reach, or coat something with cayenne pepper or tobasco sauce. It probably won't work! Roll Eyes

With a determined weimie, your best bet is to eliminate the temptation entirely.

You should mention this to your veterinarian. It could be a physical problem. I don't want to worry you, but there are several diseases that can cause extreme hunger, like diabetes, hypothyroidism, cushings disease to name a few. They all can be treated with medication. My dog was just diagnosed with hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) and would steal food and get into the garbage which she had never done before because she new better not to. She's taking thyroid supplements now which is not expensive at all. If you notice any changes in appetite or thirst,or other symtoms, it's important to rule out any physical problems first.

I always thought that police dogs were amazing,
I had a policeman show me how they keep the dogs from being poisoned when gaurding something or when someone flat wanted to kill them. He said they were taught to touch nothing no matter what it was, untill their trainer ,owner said "you can have it". He laid a bowl of food in front of him and waited and the dog waited in perfect stance. Did not jump around at all. Then finally he said ,You can have it, and the dog ate it. I was impressed.
Not sure if they still say just that ,but i think they still use the same system . Id call and see. I thought it was so cool! piddle
Repitition is the trick.

I've used tobasco sauce for my German Shepherd, and it did the trick. It was reccomended by a proffessional trainer, and it;s very safe-your dog will just want to drink some water afterwords!

lol, my dog is somewhat trained to do that. If somebody offers her food, and I give her even the most subtle hint that I don't want her to take it, then she will back off and look at me until I tell her it's ok. I'd train her the rest of the way, but i'm working on getting her to become a certified therapy dog so I want her to be friendly and able to take food from other people without me telling her it's ok. So she only does that if I give her a cue of some type.
