Is there really anything out there that is not fake or a waste of money that I can buy for my dogs that will help stop a good portion of their shedding? I'm on disability so I can't afford a bunch of trial and error stuff. If anyone can help me, please email me at fritzsmom@hotmail.com Thanks.

In my experience, the only thing that stops shedding is daily brushing, or a haircut.

Get a good shedding brush that helps take out the undercoat, and spend a half hour a day brushing. Take your dog out in the front yard, porch, kitchen, bathroom, what ever, and just spend some quality time praising them for sitting nicely and brush away.

I have three dogs with undercoats, and come spring time when the shedding kicks into high gear, I shave everyone down. I know this isn't the best choice for everyone, but it works GREAT for my dogs.

I have four dogs, one leopard gecko, and an aquarium with many different varities of fish.

I've had horses, cats, hamsters, chickens, and a few other random pets over the years.

I'm a bit of a crazy animal lady.

as far as shaving goes that doesn't stop the dog from shedding it just makes the hair shorter and less noticable. but i do agree that brushing is the best if not the only way to deal with shedding..or get a cockapoo like me yay! ( or any poodle cross and hope they get the poodle side of the family tree)and avoid it all together LOVE IT! we have a golden retriver and a white german sheperd as well now and i miss the days when it was just me and cajun when it comes to shedding anyway.

[QUOTE] we have a golden retriver and a white german sheperd as well -

I have a White German Shepard Too named "Fritz" & he is awesome, but sheds like crazy.... I have to vaccuume every day, if I don't, I'll have thousands of hairballs... literally & a coat of hair all over the floor. LOL!

Yep, regular brushing is the only way to control it. Forget ending it all together, it's not gonna happen. Personally, the best two things I have to remove dead hair from my dogs is a regular shedding blade ($7 from petsmart) and that Shed Ender tool ($14 from Walmart). I'm waiting for the price to go down on the Furminator so I can try it out too.

Vacuuming your dog can also help if you don't have a cheap vacuum like ours that gets clogged with pet fur and if your dog isn't afraid of the vacuum.

Sorry, can't resist not commenting on this one.....Why would you pay hundreds of dollars for a glorified MUTT and HOPE that it's got the non shedding poodle gene when you can just buy or adopt a purebred poodle, save a life or get a dog you can compete with, and not have to worry about luck of the draw? Poodles aren't the only minimal shedding breed either. Besides, getting rid of the dog she has because it sheds too much and replacing it with another dog isn't an option (or at least shouldn't be as that is very irresponsible).

And usually its THOUSANDS and not HUNDREDS. Plus, all dogs shed. It's just to what degree that the dog sheds.

we have three long haired dogs and to keep down the shedding we regularly brush and then have them groomed about every two months. The groomer really gets in there and gets rid of the dead hair, plus they look nice and clean when they are done Smile

Ahh, that would be called a curry comb. They actually do work relatively well on short coated dogs. You may, however, want to check out the ones at petsmart in the horse grooming section as they are better built and designed (after all, they are made to be used on horses!).
