Hey yall. well i am thinking about getting my papillon a pass to the dog beach but i have a few problems. she's had bad experiences with bigger dogs before and i don't know if a dog beach is the right place for her. Do they usually have fairly well behaved animals there?
I don't take my Pom to the dog park simply because she is so small and aren't most of the breeds there large dogs? I'm always afraid she will be accidentally squished
I do take her to the public beach though and she loves it as did my labs
Also we go to the public park where she can be around children, other dogs on leash, and walk the trails.
Plus these things are free

why are beaches not good? What bad things have happened there?
waviewer, I know that before I took Corgi to the Dog Park I was not too sure of the outcome either. Yes mostly they were large dogs but that never stopped them from having an excellent time, the next time may be different though. But I think as long as you take the time to get your POM aclimated and greeted to the other dogs I do not think that it should be a big issue.. BUT you have to keep in mind, yes the other dogs and thier owners may not always be as well socialized as your POM. I guess our Dog Park is free too.. I am not sure if I would have went if it was a pay place, but the dogs getting together would be worth it..
I have taken a great deal of time to introduce her to other dogs of all sizes and many different situations.
My POM is a very friendly dog that loves everyone and is friendly towards every dog we've met of every size.
In our obedience class she is well mannered and on task, while the Irish Setter, Goldens, and Akita in class with us, while all sweet and sociable dogs, are distracted by her and whine and bark and struggle to run over to check her out.
We've allowed them to come sniff her, while she sat patiently being sniffed by dogs 10 times her size, and she's been walked by them while they struggle to get closer, all in an effort to get these dogs used to her and stop being so distracted.
The problem is not my dog, or me being too protective.
The problem I worry about is as you say, other dog owners and their dogs not being as well socialized or considerate as my dog or myself.
I would hate to be at a dog park where there were dogs just as distracted but whose owners weren't as considerate as those in our class.
As long as we have a close beach to go to and a close park that allows her to be there and socialize with people, children, and other dogs on leash I don't feel deprived that we don't drive the 20 miles to the dog park
I agree if I had a beach I would go there also. No question about it. But that comes from living in the plains and only seeing an ocean 2 times in my 40+ years. I think on first time seeing them, that the larger dogs think of smaller breed dogs as either puppies or toys to play with. That comes with the socialization of the large dogs to respect the small ones.. But as you see not every one does that. Have fun in the sand, I envy you now.
I am sure that she wonders sometimes if they will take off with her..
She has not seen the 'Wizard of Oz' You know the flying Monkeys when they grab Toto... Your dog may get traumatized if she saw that.. Just kidding ya know.
Hi all, I take my three to the beach all the time. I have a yorkie, a pom, and a large mix. Most of the time the other dogs are great. It's rare that you find one that is mean or aggressive at least on Huntington or Long Beach California. I can't speak for other beaches but it would seem that it would be the same. Hope that helps
