One of the reasons for placing parks (People or Dog style) where they are is because they are in a "Greenway" area.. (floodplain of a river or creek.) Always be aware of the current and previous weather conditions when going to these parks.. Our area had a 3 inch rainfall one night last week, and upstream there were reports of 6 to 7 inches of rain over night.. Our dog park is next ot the river in a public park. I went by this area about noon the day after the rain, the river was a little out of its banks, but not bad. By 5:00 pm the dog park area, about 70 yards from the river, was under 3 foot of water and rising. About 7:00 it stopped rising but it was up to the tops of the posts on the park fence about 5 foot. Most of this flood water came from upstream, and took about 8 to 12 hours before it got to the park area.. The water receeded totally off of the park area by the 3rd day after the rain..
But be aware that flooding can occur very rapidly.. Some folks had thier cars caught in the parking lot and could not get them out because the driveway to the parking lot was lower then anywhere else, they had water up to the windows on thier cars.
No dogs hurt or lost, but some crazies tried kiyaking (sp?) and had to be pulled out by the Search and Rescue teams.
6-7 inches of rain???????? my guys would have totally refused to go anywhere.... lol... They want their paws dried with its raining a tiny bit, and refuse to go out if it is raining at all. They do love snow though. I guess its the Russian in them... lol...
I have found a news vidoe of the dog park being flooded. This is from the next morning. The start of the video you can see the green plastic fence of the dog park sticking out of the water.. It is a temporary as we raise money for a permanent chain-link fence... The cars in the parking lot are the ones that got flooded the night before. HOLY cow!!! We had a bad flood here in 96 that took the Shenandoah River 15 feet over its banks. It was awful! We had a blizzard then two days later it got up to 48 degrees, and rained. WE were bombed with water!
