i havent been to my dog park, i get nervous cause sometimes harley doesnt like to be around other dogs till she gets to know them but i have driven by a few times and am waiting for it to be almost empty for a day
i do know that there are too next to eachother and it looks like one is for older dogs or shyer dogs and one for more energetic younger dogs, they seem neat, i would love to go though
I've heard from so many people that dog parks are not a good place to take your dog, your dog can catch things from other dogs and get into fights etc. Has anyone else heard the same thing?
Dog parks are a great idea, but unfortunatly good ideas aren't always great in practice. Most times dog parks are ok, with only occasional scuffles, but they can be a disaster waiting to happen. Dogs instinctively run in packs and what do you have in a dog park, lots of strange dogs running together, they're going to determine a pecking order one way or another, and if your dog is the "new" dog, hopefully you and the other owners have enough control of their dogs to head off any challenges. Some dog parks i've seen are large enough that people can generally take their dogs and play without any conflict, others are small and penned in and you can't avoid the contact with other dogs. A lot of people think all dogs should get a long, and that doesn't always happen. Besides that you have the health issues, but if you keep you pet healthy by feeding it right and getting it enough exercise there shouldn't be too much risk. Just like you keep yourself healthy, do you get sick from every "germ" you come in contact with??
Somehow it seems the term Dog Park is misinterpreted by many pet owners.
They were originally intended to be a fenced in area for an owner to take their dog for off leash exercise and play with the owner!
They were never intended to be a place to turn 10 or 20 dogs of varying, temperments, shapes and sizes loose at the same time and expect them to all play nice with each other!
As Inn81 correctly pointed out, dogs are pack animals. Their pack is their family of humans. A dog should be thoroughly socialized around other dogs in a controlled environment, before it's taken to a dog park!
If I were to take my dog to a dog park it would be at a time when few dogs were there, and I would only allow interaction with one dog at a time. Close attention would be paid to canine body language, and any potential disagreement would be stopped before it could become a problem.
Most of the time would be spent in something the dog and I could do together, even if it was just letting the dog run free checking out all the sights and smells and playing frisbee or throwing the ball.
if you live in or near vancouver, BC i know of a dog park where i take my dog alot. it's called Dogwood park. it's a special park made just for dogs. there are lots of trails and a pond and the best part about this park is that you are allowed to have your dog(s) off leash so they can run, run, run and have fun with other dogs. this park is located on 24th ave.(just 2 minutes west of 140th st.) in white rock, bc.
If she is up to date on all of her vaccinations and has also been protected against bordatella, (kennel cough) she should be fine. Dogs that visit dog parks should be checked for internal parisites, (worms) more often too.
What kind of dogs do yall have? I don't have any dog parks where I'm from, but there is a park where dogs are welcome. But even if I had a dog park in my area, I don't think I would be comfortable with bringing my dogs beings they're so small...I have two chihuahuas...1 short haired and 1 long haired. They play well with small to medium sized dogs, but they hate large dogs. I would die if something happened to one of my babies.
Some unfortunate incidences have caused me not to go to any of our local dog parks. It is not worthg the risk to my dog.
Somewhere in Florida a private dog park has been opened. There are fees for usage, but they have strict rules. Being that it is private, they can chose the members. They also have personnel on site to make sure everything is fine.
I would look into a private, membership dog park, but they do not exist around here.
I had my dog attacked at dog parks. Granted, the majority of the dogs and their owners were responsible, but an idiot( I can't think of a better term) would show up with an unsocial dog.
Also have you noticed what the most common reponse of the owner of the dog that shows aggression or attacks your dog is? My dog has never done that before. Oh, right. Maybe not today, but never, Ha!
We have a park that is 'bout a block and a half from where we live. I don't take Schumi there very often. Not because there is lots of dogs there all the time but because if I let her loose she might run away and I don't want that to happen because there are lots of dogs that live in my neighborhood and so far she hasn't gotten along with any of the dogs there. But I do take her for walks around the block (if weather permits) every day. We have property about 45 mins. away and we take our dogs up there and let them run around up there for a few hours every week. They love it because there's lots of snow and we throw snowballs and the dogs try to catch them, it's very funny to watch. The only time something bad happened was when my dog got stuck in the snow: there was about 3 1/2 feet of snow drift and my dog is only about 2feet tall(toes to ears) and she just had to jump in it and she got stuck, (I had to pick her up and carry her out much to both of our dislike.) Thanks!
