X-Weighted a new show on Discovery Health does not have its own forum and apparently the diet and fitness forum is closed so I'm posting here. They have had 2 shows featuring a long term WLS patient (probably VBG's). The last show, this week showed a fitness instructor who wanted to lose 30 lbs. I found several things in that show which concerned me.

1. Her personal trainer stated that people who attend her classes wouldn't be inspired by her because she is plus size and that is so wrong - people are much MORE inspired by a fit plus size person because that goal of looking like extremely slim is unattainable for most people.

2. Although they saw the scar on her tummy and she told them she'd had a WLS, they did not take this in consideration. She was slow in losing weight because drinking was a part of her life, obviously a transfer addiction that she may have needed to reduce stress. During the duration of the 6 months, I felt they kind of battered her a bit because she was not losing faster. I think if they want to work with WLS patients, they ought to learn more about their needs and issues. Also with a VBG, especially a long term one, they cannot comfortably eat a lot of foods so they tend to eat the softer stuff that goes down more easily. And unless they put everything in the Magic Bullet, which they may not have time to do, they may be eating carbs etc.

2. She was also 41 and a person of that age has different issues and also a slower metabolism than a younger person. Again I felt they didn't take this in consideration either.

3. I felt she did very well... she worked very hard and cut down her drinking and lost a bunch of inches which is really where it's at - Dr Oz who does a lot on Discovery Health, says you should judge by inches and NOT by weight. But their praise of her work was very lukewarm because she didn't make the goal on the scale.

WLS patients have some different issues and if they are going to use WLS patients on these shows, they ought to learn what those issues are and not just belittle a person who is trying as hard as this lady obviously was doing...
