Well anyone who thinks that has never had a weight problem. I Have respect for anyone who goes that extra mile to get help. It's like anyother addiction. I for one had the surgery almost 2 years ago and I would do it again tomorrow. In the words of Forrest Gump " and that's all I'm going to say bout that".... but everyone has an opinion and everyone is entitled but not everyone thinks its disgusting....

There's obviously more to the obesity epidemic than people simply deciding to stop eating. Calling people suffering from obesity names does nothing to help the situation. Unfortunately for the patients on this show, their medical condition is something that is very visible to other people, some of whom are extremely insensitive to their struggles.

My heart goes out to most of these people. They are in a situation that seems hopeless. The Doctors on Big Medicine are terrific and I just love the psychologist. I only have a problem, when they start blaming everyone and their dog for the reason they are fat. As Dr. Garth said about Marc, he blames other people and Doctor said, he doesn't take responsibility. That's why I said "most people" at the beginning. If they would admit that they are part of the problem, I do believe they can be helped. No one is holding them down, force feeding them. Allen, I believe, has the biggest problem and that's his mother. She has made him the dependent person he is and contributed to his size so he feels no pride in himself and she comes to his rescue. He even admitted his relatives talk about him and his mother. They have an unusual relationship. Even with his bypass done, she's probably trying to stuff food in him. I know he has plenty of doctors looking after him, and I sincerely hope they can get her to let up and let him be the man he wants to be.

My two cents Roll Eyes

Ok, I am obese. Yes I don't like being this way.
Yes I have tried a lot of diets. Yes I am the one who puts everything into my mouth. No I am not happy with the decisions I've made that landed me in this position.
I refuse to play the blame game, I did this.
I also know the diets I have been trying are not working, I need help. If that be WLS who are you to condem what I have done to myself when I do a good enough job.
There are a lot of things I would rather not pay for that other people do, but I have not lived their life and I am not here to judge. People are not perfect. Please stop behaving like you are. If you don't like what you see be kind and just quietly look away.

I'm sorry but I do have to address the last part of the message. The vendicitive side of me finds it imperitive As far as "If you don't eat you can't get fat." comment. You try the don't eat option first and in 3 months let me know how thats working for you.

Thanks
Pat

The only thing that bothers me about this board, this show and Brookhaven is so many people going on and on about how they're helpless, it's not their fault, they don't eat more than other people, etc.

I want to commend you for taking responsibility for your situation. It's such a breath of fresh air and a true indicator of character.

It's a slipper slope towards obesity. You start out chubby, then become overweight, and then moderately obese and then it gets harder from there.

I got to the point where I was moderately obese and I realised I couldn't do it, I did NOT want to be shopping in plus size stores the rest of my life, I did NOT want to out of breath going up the stairs, I wanted to feel good about myself and wear cute jeans like the other girls.

It took a few years and a LOT of hard work, but I'm now wearing a size nine in Guess jeans and I feel great.

The very first thing I had to do was admit that it was my fault and it WAS the way I was eating. I truly hope everything goes well for you and if WLS is your best option I hope you go for it. Good luck.

as both an overweight person and a future doctor it really gives a person the view into the life of a person who is morbedly obese or grossly morbidly obese. it can also show what a person that is over wieght that has never been "popular" and everyone should try to be more sensitive toward others and try to understand where and what the person had to go through for them to get to the show and beyond the embarrassment of possible public humiliation.

ssmachine7, there are diseases that cause weight gain and by weight that can mean heaviness which can be fluid. Read the lymphedema file folder I posted above tonight.

People don't want to be overweight, it just happens and once you do get oversized it's very hard to control your weight with conventional methods.

I hope that you never have to endure a disease that causes fluid or weight gain. I have lymphedema which causes weight gain most of it is fluid. I look about 7-8 months pregnant, my left foot is huge, right hand is swollen, and my face/neck/chest at times are puffy. Do I want to look this way? NEVER. I never used to until cancer and then lymphedema and all the other illnesses that follow, lupus, hypothyroid, hormonal problems, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, anemia, ect. It's hard for me just to go up a flight of stair because of pain. I try to exercise and do yoga, but there is nothing I can do. Before cancer, lymphedema and the rest I weighed 100 pounds. Now I weigh closer to 200. I eat very healthy, fruit and toast breakfast, lunch soup and crackers, dinner sensible. I have starved myself to lose weight only to build up more fluid.

If you find yourself in this situation you will have more compassion for people with problems. That's what life is all about, being kind and compassionate to those around us.

One can get over being a "disgustingly fat blob". I doubt that you can get over being just plain disgusting.

Hey ssmachine, spell much?

Nice comments from a semi-literate knuckle-dragger. Your lack of self esteem is showing.

Obviously, you need to denigrate others to make yourself feel important. Sad, that. At least people who suffer from obesity have a surgical option. There is no cure for people like yourself who need a personality transplant.

This may or may not be the place for this question but I do have one question about all of this. I understand that people don't choose to be obese any more than anyone chooses to be addicted to alclohol because I mean really, all you have to do is stop drinking...

So I get being overweight but I wonder about the enablers. I mean if you have not left your bed in six years someone is cooking for your, or you are really rich. Don't these people have some responsibility? I just don't get that part of it.

Oh my gosh, why didn't I think of that??! Just don't eat and I won't be fat! Even though I'm watching my peers scarf down tons of food while I look down at my 6 ounces of fat-free/sugar-free yogurt. Just don't eat; I didn't know that's all there was to it. Yes, let's all stop eating so we won't be fat. We'll be dead.

Believe it or not some obese people are starving. They cut their eating so much trying to lose weight that they are literally starving and throwing their metabolism into low gear just to survive without knowing it. Yes, they are obese but they can cure that with the help of surgery. Your stupidity is obviously long-term and cannot without a lobotomy.

Those who watch it are seeking a support system and if you aren't looking for that or don't fall into that category, then yea why are you watching the show?

I have no interest in murder scenes, so therefore I do not watch shows like CSI. Everyone has different interests and mine is in health and medical. I have worked in the medical field for 23 years, and I have also had the RNY surgery. This show is something I find appealing because it is about things I know and live.

I really couldn't care less about fishing, therefore I don't watch Deadliest Catch- but I hear it has quite a following. Why? Because there are people that are interested in that stuff. And I'm glad there's a show out there for those folks, just like I'm glad this show is here for me.

If it isn't anything you are interested in watching, why are you wasting your time posting to its community?

no its not. their are people who have tried every diet in the book to lose weight and can't. I remeber trying several even weight watchers only to gain weight. Some people metabolism work different than others. Another thing is a lot of diets cost MONEY and majority of people overweight can't afford the programs for ex. nutrisystem look at the cost.and when you're trying to feed a family mac and cheese is more filling than fruits and vegetables.

I was thinking the same thing when i read that. Obviously he/or she is just someone who wants to make thier opinion about obesity know to everyone. I have dealt with such ignorance in the past 10 years since i have become obese, and know that there is nothing we can do to make people who are not in this predicament to understand what we are going through. They never will unless they walk a mile in our shoes. But yes that was a very ignorant statement to make. And thank god for shows like Big Medicine to show the courage that these people have to make changes in thier lives. If only we could all be that brave.
