I am just starting the process. I had my first appointment with my doctor today. She doesn't usually do the lap band because so many patients that she did the surgery on said it was too slow so she ended up doing a bypass surgery after all. There is a commercial for the lap band on our TV stations here. In the small print, it says it took 2 years for hte lady to lose 50 pounds. That is much slower than with the bypass. But it is also less invasive than the bypass.
jvonde, Thank you for your reply! The few people that I know that had lap-band, have had a very slow weight loss. I think that might be healthier, but I also know it is easier to 'cheat' with the band. To me the band seems best for people with less weight to lose.
It is such a tough decision to go with a surgery as invasive as GBP, that is why I was wondering why people would choose it over lap band. After talking with Dr. Garth, I knew it was the only choice for me.
When I had my GB 4 1/2 years ago, my surgeon was only doing that procedure. If I were to do it all over again, I believe I'd go that route again. Then again, my BMI was quite high (I was 377 at my know highest weight), which would make it ideal for the GB as opposed to the Lap.
I actually had an appointment with a lap band surgeon. Then, I started to read a lot of profiles on ObesityHelp and no one who had the lap band had a BMI as high as mine. (I think it was 56 before surgery.) I figured that was no coincidence. I decided RNY was a better route for me and I think I made the right decision.
