Hello all. I'm very new to the group but have been lookint at WLS for some time now. Ok for like 3 years. I have gone to the 2 hour seminar or informational meeting almost 2 months ago and they sent me a list of things that I need to do to get approval from insurance for the surgery and I am doing these things. One thing that concerns me is that I don't even meet the surgeon until I am approved by my insurance for the surgery. That bothers me, What if I hate the guy and want the other one to do the follow ups? What if I don't like either one want to go somewhere else? Is it worth doing everything they have on the list then end up not liking the person that is going to cut me open? There is another place 30 min. from where I live that also does Bypass. Comments anyone? Thanks Patti
I would think if your insurance company approves the surgery, you could get any doctor you want. My suggestion is to find a reputable doctor first, then ask for approval from the insurance company. That sounds more logical to me. Just a thought.
I would check out the surgeon's history. How many of the WLS are you looking at has he done- both open and laparoscopically? what is his change rate from Laparoscopic to open?

Your approval is good for 6 months. So call your insurance to verify. But it sounds odd that you won't meet the Doc until you are to that point. Even tho I only had a 15 min meeting with my Doc prior to the workup- I still got to meet him.
