i got my red eader slider freddy when i was in kindergarten, 10-11 years ago. he is in a 45 gallon tank right now, but his shell keeps hitting the sides. i cant afford a much bigger tank...what should i do? i was thinking maybe a kiddie pool, but i didnt know if i could put a filter and light fixtures on it...or fit it in my room.
what's a red eared slider? I am going to guess it's a turtle. I would think a kiddie pool with a heat lamp above it (or whatever he needs) and find a way to filter it. That's not good. Maybe BUILD a tank with large pieces of glass that can be purchased (I think and if they can It would probably be at a hardware store or something) but I have no experience with this stuff so I would probably have to tell you to call a pet store person or vet. I hope all goes well!
P.S. How long should he live for? Just wondering. I don't NEED to know but I would like to. Thanks!
I would recommend a custom built vivarium. If at all possible, try to build him a small outdoor enclosure for the summer months, and a much larger enclosure for the inside during the winter months. How large is your turtle at the moment? You will probably want to build an enclosure that is at least twice his width wide and at least three times his length long, so that he is able to swim freely and not get wedged between areas.
right now i am guessing he is about 8-10" long and 6" wide. i live out in the country, and if i keep him outside he may be attacked by my cyotes and wild dogs we got out here. i'm not really the handy girl type, and i wouldnt know the first thing when it comes to biulding an environment for him.
I would talk to a friend or family member who is knowledgable about wood working, and maybe they can help you. If you do use a kittie pool, you will need to find some way to hook up the filter and you will need to find a way to make sure that the turtle is able to get out of the water and on to dry land to bask in the UV light. I would recommend a very simple but large setup with a kittie pool that leads to dry land by a little ramp.
what if i got a kiddie pool and built up the sides with wood, but cut a hole in the side of the plastic for the filter. and then i have some light weight composite wood that might float, or maybe a log. maybe some rock in the bottom?
the rock is a good idea but make sure it is twice hes size or biger but no less. and you should make a hole but don't let enny water come out, that will just be misreble.
Your kiddie pool idea sounds great, but make sure you have a basking area where he is able to get out of the water and soak up UV rays! Good luck with your plan!
